Okay guys. I finished block sanding with 320 grit last night. I'm headed out to rent the big compressor this morning, planning to paint later this weekend. I'm using Nason paints...blocked out the high build, so I still need to spray the 2K sealer, then Graphite Gray mettallic BC, then the black metallic Z-28 stripes, then top it all with the clear. I plan to take the doors and panels off before doing any more painting, but I'm not sure how to go about laying out the stencils for the stripes with it all taken apart?
I figured I would lay the front sheet metal out in order, line it up, and mask the stripes out, but the rear deck is more of a problem. Do I paint the gray basecoat, wait a couple hours, then bolt the lid on to mark the lines, then take it apart to paint? The stencil kit says to wait up to four days for the paint to cure or I'll get bubbles...but that seems more like it's meant for the vinyl stripe kit? And each of the paints has a window of time in which the next coat is supposed to be applied...and the compressor is only mine for a couple days. Thanks to the long weekend, I got sunday and monday for free, but it has to be back tuesday morning. any help on the steps and what to watch for would be much appreciated. thanks, clay |

The problem I have with this is the stencil kit somtimes pulls the base of because the glue is so strong on the kit.I based then cleared the whole car let sit for a couple days then layed the stripes on the cleared panels. Then I cleared them again and let sit for a couple more days. Then sanded the whole car again and cleared the entire car but this way you have enough clear to bury the stripes....I know this sounds like a ton of work but the results are worth it because you have plenty of material to work with.

I use this method when airbrushing pictorials or graphics. I'm often given panels from other shops, do my artwork, and shoot the SG-100 intermediate clear over just the artwork. Then give it back to the shop who is doing the complete. No need to worry about what clear they are using either. That is precautionary for those with limited product knowledge, but it's reasons have validity. SG-100 can be shot over basecoat and/or clearcoats. Proper preparation and procedures apply as per standard practice and HOK's recommendations. |
