I am going to order a cam next week but not sure on the specs. Every time i talk to comp or crane the cam they recomend is different. I was also thinking of a custom ground cam. I read about david Vizard and his computer program and it sounds good but I still wonder. Has anyone used his service and was it as advertised, the ideal cam.

I did not use David Vizard's web site to inquire about a cam.
I talked to the company who uses his computer program (I can't recall the name) wich means that they should end up with the same results cause all they do is punch the numbers into a computer program and let the program sort it all out.

The result for my mostly street car with S/R Torquer 202/160 heads with pocket porting on a 350 with 10.2 compression......650 LIFT and way more duration than I wanted

Then they tried to talk me into a Comp Cams XE HYD after I told them I wasn't interested in having the "custom" cam ground.

Mayby try calling ALL of the big cam manufactures and getting a recommendation. Then put all those together and pic the cam in the middle. [img]graemlins/thumbsup.gif[/img]

Go over to Pat Kelley's great "Dynamic Compression Ratio Calculator" site that you can get to from his sig., read it and then play around with it as a start.

May prove very helpful, plus come back and ask what everybody thinks about your cam choice when you get one you like.

I tried emailing to David on his website but the message came back as invalid. I think the company is Motor Machine and Supply? What specific specs did they recommend?

Either the program, or the data entry people, are on crack.

Recommendation for strip /strip Dart CNC oval port head 10.2:1 3500lbs and 4500 converter - 286/294@50th with 826"/765" lift on 116th centerline installed 8 degrees advanced.

YUP - that'll do just nicely, GACK!

Thats what they said would work the best? How could that even be close to streetable? do you have to tell them what RPM range you want.

It seems like everyone says too radical or too mild never in the middle, whats that about. I have had cams reccomended that were from 250@ .050 to 276 @.050 The 276 came from Afr themselves which they say in tere website you can run a smaller cam and make the same power as others heads so i dont know.

Camshafts are all a guessing game. When it comes down to it, a cam selection is based only on past peoples experiences. I computer program had its programmers who were writing programs that guess (albeit with a lot of data in their hands) what a cam will perform like. I believe that choosing the exact perfect cam for a situation is impossible, and a best guess can only be found through pouring over tons of relevant data.

I think a better way to go about picking "the right cam" is to choose a cam you think is suitable, and research the behavioral characteristics it will give in your car. In other words, get a theoretical baseline, and go from there. Not even the NASCAR guys all choose the same cam, so you wont. It's best to just be content with a cam that will produce what you want out of the car.

I choose my first cam myself after thinking what i wanted and reading as much as i could about it. Well now that the car is running have tuned and tuned this thing and cant get it to run how i know it should, the plugs run a consistant tan and the timing is what feels strongest, i know i need a dyno or trap speeds to do the tuning with but both are about 3 hours away and i dont believe it will get the car to where it should be. so the cam is the only thing i can think of that could cause this.

My cam right now is 310 adv 264@.050 on both int/exaust and .590 lift. The other thing i dont understand is this cam is extremely easy to live with on the street. This thing idols at 900 rpm with a lope but smooths out at about 1200 and it pulls great from about 3000 to 6500 The claimed range is 4500-7500.

Most the cams reccomended have less adv dur and about .630 lift but about the same dur. @.050

What do you guys think

David Vizards cam program works mainly of off "overlap" - lobe separation.
Also the lift that is given is the "ideal" lift, which most of the time is unreasonable.
But he also does cams for Pro Stock guys, so there has to be something there.
I still think every engine is different, and the only way to know what works the best
is to stick it on a dyno, and throw a bunch of different sticks at it! [img]graemlins/clonk.gif[/img]
