Default WHAT's THE "DIFF"

Hey all.......well after taking all your advice the mighty 454 conversion is all but complete...ready to fire and run this weekend
OK so the next issue i have is WHAT DIFF do i need???Remembering parts are herd to find over here..1 option i do have though is a 10bolt posi out of a 67/68 camaro...So its a bolt in swap....easy...$650 nzd..($480 usd) roughly...........What i need to know will the 10 bolt hold up to the torque of the big block????
A 9" swap isnt rocket science but the price of them here is stupid so i'm kinda holding back from that at this stage
Thanks Gav

Talking Re: WHAT's THE "DIFF"

Just remember, you can't just bolt it in, if you are talking the differential only (insides). Your gear pattern must be set, and pinion bearing pre-load must also be set. Also there are two 10-bolt rear, styles.

8.2" 10-bolt stock in most 67-69 Camaro's

8.5" 10-bolt stock in most 71-? Nova's. This axle is stronger than the 8.2's and can be built almost as strong as a 12-bolt.

Assuming that you have an early Camaro and this rear end is from an early Camaro then you can swap the complete rear end with no problems. The 8.2 10 bolt is known for it's weakness and won't hold up to a lot of abuse from the 454. As long as you have street tires on it and you do not allow it to wheel hop then it might hold up for a while. I would be looking for a '72 or later Nova or other X body GM car for the 8.5 10 bolt. This is a direct swap and a stronger rear end. You could also use a GM truck 12 bolt and have it modified to fit your car. It would have to be narrowed and a few other modifications, but you would have a rear end that was stronger than either one of the 10 bolt rear ends, and probably cheaper than the 9 inch.
