Default M22 - M22W - M22Z Picture Comparison

Here are the three Autogear M22 style gearsets. The M22 (2.20:1) is on the left, the M22W (2.56:1) is in the middle, and the M22Z 2.98:1) is on the right.

Take note the size of the input (MDG) and 4th gear on the countergear as the ratios change.

These three driveline examples will have the same 1st gear take off feel.

M22 / 4.10:1
M22W / 3.55:1
M22Z / 3.08:1

Jody, can these gearsets (M22Z in particular) be used in any muncie case, or do you have to have an M22 to start with?

Thanks!

Any Muncie 1" countershaft case is needed for the conversion.

If you have a Muncie 7/8" countershaft case, it can be machined for a 1" countershaft. This is a great upgrade for an early Muncie case to utilize the 1" gearsets

My next set of pictures will illustrate the difference between the M21 and M22 helix angle differences.

The M22, M22W, and M22Z all have a 1:1 final drive. The M21Y has a final drive of .86:1

oh wow then the M21Y is not preferred in my opinion....just curious, how much weaker is the M22Z(2.98:1) when comparred to the other two ratio set ups? and what would be a more durable set up like for launching? examples are:a 4:56 rear end gear with 2.52:1 first gear muncieora 3:55 rear end gear with a 2.98:1 first gear muncie

The closer you are to 1:1 the stronger the transmission gearset. So, the standard M22 gearset is stronger than the M22Z gearset.

The larger pinion head 3.55:1 differential gearset is stronger than the smaller pinion head 4.56:1 differential gearset.

It is all about the driveline torque balance and the proper combination selection for longevity. What are your realistic goals with your vehicle?
