68 Bird - Love that Car: Why did the CDN PMD use a 303 SBC in Trans AM - Jerry Titus - Too bad for GM as AMC and Donahue dominated with the Javelin. The American Pontiac 303 just didn't cut it.
We are GM but to say the least GM and Ford where behind AMC from 68 to 70 in Trans AM. The only Fire Bird I drove was a 68 SOHC Sprint 6 convertible , 5 on the Floor, which I maintained for a friend. In years to come, who would care or even know the difference , but I would take a 327 in a 68 Bird any day. I would give anything to restore a 68 390 AMX, 1968, what a year, but 1970 was the proof for GM; but, TOO LATE - No matter how I love the 69Z - TSK TSK- My 72 detuned 340 MAG RS Challenger would shut the Z down and stomp a 70 BOSS 302 - In Other Words: Do what you intend to do with your RIDE - "Just try and Catch Me Criteria" is what it takes. If you know your Detroit V8 will approach 7000rpm and not Break - You know what I'm getting at ;o)

Even though the 327 sbc, installed in the car when I purchased it, makes the car far from original, I could care less!....I don't even think you can get any engine parts for the original Poncho 400 motor!.....I like to think of my car as a poor man's Camaro!.....I just don't care for the Firebird's long, humped out hood!.....But yeah, the 1968 model, be it a Camaro or a Firebird, is the best year I believe! ![]() |

Sish! The Firebird was worth more then the Camaro back then and still is for anyone knows the difference.
If you think a 68 Bird Hood is long, look over the Hood of a 70Z, the rest of the car is just a shadow - When I open both doors, it's wider then the car is long, so take care where you park - On top of it all it don't turn very sharp and you give in to spinning the rear tires just to navigate Parking Lots - LOL

Look at my Local - I'm CDN - I'm Partial to the Poncho and grew up with them pounding Mopars, Chevys and Fords - We are a CDN Breed that Americans never experienced - MY Dad was a Pontiac Man from 62 to 68 and that's a Canadian Ride - There where no Turbo-Jet Decals on our Air Breathers. Granted the Firebird was American but not exclusively for Canadians as the Asto-Jet Decal over a SBC or BBC was seen under the hood of many a Firebird here.
)One of the main reasons was that we had a TH400 with the Chevy Bell-housing that the US didn't have. I'm a Muncie/HWY Warrior Addict and didn't give a Damn but there was no escaping the CDN PONCHO with a BBC backed with a TH400 and a 12 Bolt in them days and that includes the Acadian 427 which ONLY existed over the PMD Counter or from the Local Wreckers. CDN Improvisation or not but not even at HEMI DART could Shoot down our 427HD Acadian. I've seen them run at the Jack Pine; by the way, you could order an Acadian SD Square Port 375Hp 396 through a Secretary at Canada's PMD Office including a Holley Carb and Optional Headers in the Trunk when you picked the ride up at the Pontiac Dealer. If you don't think the 427HD Acadian was not recognized, take a look at Dixon's TIN Indian 1967 Acadian 427 HT AHRA's B/Modified Record "Bill Knafel " in Google. We had 427 Astro-Jets 's under the hoods of our Full Sized Pontiac's. Gotta love 1968 ;o)
