Hey guys. I am a total newbie that picked up a 1968 Camaro convertible last night. It was an estate car so they had no info.

Here is what I know:

The car has a Edelbrock 1406 carb
Edelbrock 2975 intake
Comp Cam procam
Msd 6AL ignition
MSD Blaster 2 coil 8200

Plate says:

OSC
ST 68 12467 nor 156743
TR 711 F1


Engine by valve cover is all painted up. But it ends in 328FA or 328EA. Its difficult to see.

It appears to be a 3 speed automatic.
Has hideway doors on the lights.
Looks like the hood is new with the two fake vents on top

Based on the Edelbrock, I think its a 350 even though the body says 327.

It leaking from the tranny pan a bit.
Its leaking from the fly wheel below the inspection plate. But its not oil.
Tach not working. (from the after market Ignition)

I changed the gas filter, plugs. The cam seems to be great on the high end but its almost stalling at idle. Extremely rough.

Perhaps its a timing issue?

Sorry this is so wordy. ANY INFO ON ANYTHING WILL BE HELPFUL! I LOVE WORKING ON THIS STUFF BUT KNOW NOTHING!

Check the numbers on the Pad on the Passenger Side of the motor and post them here. Then we will be able to determine what motor is in your Camaro and if it is original to the car.
Photos will be very helpful to see if it is a real Rally Sport or a standard Camaro with a RS Grille. Please take a photo of the rear body panel. Are there Back up lights under the bumper?
Please post the information and you will get the answers you need.

The 328 comes out to be 3) march, 2) 2nd, 8) 1968. the fa or ea is the application, Those letters dont coinside with camaro as far as I can tell, there are people here in the know. The trim tags on a 68 dont tell much TR 711 black deluxe int, F Island Teal, 1 white top. hope this helps

EA = '68 327 w/M/T; FA = '69 327 w/M/T; I would suggest its a '68 block since it has a a Mar '68 date.

March 6 build date = 06C
Blue wire for oil pressure sending unit underneath distributor.
Definitely EA engine code = '68 327 block.

The 06C on the cowl tag is actually a June 68 build, third week.

EA is a correct suffix for an L30 (327/275) with manual trans in a 68 Camaro, but there should be a partial VIN stamp to the left (passenger side) of that assembly stamp (should be 18Nxxxxxx, where xxxxxx are numbers matching the car VIN). It has to be a 67-up engine, as the assembly stamp starts with "V" (Flint V8 started using this convention in 67 model year).

Maybe get the casting number and date off the back of the block, on the flat area above the bellhousing? SHould be 3914660 or 3914678.

Without a partial VIN, and with the engine being assembled approximately 3 months before the car was built, it is not conclusive (yet) that it could be the original, born with engine.

Now to the problems you were asking for help with.

The really rough idle could be a number of things, but I would start looking for a vacuum leak. Can you see what intake gaskets (between intake and head) were used? If a thicker gasket, like the Fel-Pro Blue, was used it can cause a massive vacuum leak that will act as you have described. An aluminum intake like that needs a thin paper/fiber gasket, like a Fel-Pro Print-o-seal or good ol' GM; the thicker gaskets like the Blues do not get crushed enough to make a good seal at the low manifold bolt torques used with the aluminum intakes.

The TAg section guys have I identified the engine as a 1967 Chevelle 327. Ah well. The car was very inexpensive.

Unrelated, the tach does not work and I would love to fix the idle issue.
