The VIN on the Ebay ad 164478C104486 is definately not a Camaro VIN. If thats the VIN on your dash and title you got some problems. Get it back to the seller as soon as possible, then call the cops.

what do you mean "under hood". The cowl tag is under the hood on the firewall. The VIN is on the dash like modern cars. (unless your car's a '67. i didn't look) Also, I don't think these old cars come up on CARFAX. I think 1983 is the earliest year, or something like that. google: Camaro Research Group. It's a good place to spend some time studying these cars. Unbelievable amount of info. welcome to Team Camaro too.

I guess you can advertise anything you want, as long as you can get by with it. I think you need to get ahold of the police on this one and report fraud to ebay.... Shame too, looks like you found a neat car... |

Removing the VIN from one car and attaching it to another is a federal crime, punishable by fines and/or jail time.
You can check the hidden VIN under the cowl vent grille, but it is not going to match the dash. You will see either 18Nxxxxxx or 18Lxxxxxx. http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#PartialVIN An NICB check of the car's original VIN, which will be 123378N(or L) xxxxxx or 124378N (or L) xxxxxx will likely be performed during your VIN inspection, and if the car comes up stolen, you will lose the car (it will be siezed). The absolute best advice has been given already; return the car, get your money back, and run away. At the very least, you need to notifiy ebay that the VIN does not belong to this car, and does not even belong to this model car. If the ebay buyer protection program is in play here, you need to get the ball rolling. There's nothing to wait for, there is no good outcome. Several folks here have lost their cars in this very scenario, with no compensation whatsoever.

It is a nice car, fun and a good price. I hope to be able to keep it. 'Clean title' refers to a title not being salvaged, junked, or rebuildable. It's not an indication of lien status. often titles are refered to as 'clean and clear' meaning clean of salvage staus, and clear of liens.
I'll wait on any legal type actions pending DMV inspection. The money has already changed hands and the car is in my driveway, so there is no rush at this point. If inside the DMV computer this VIN says camaro, then something happened a long time ago. The guy i bought this from supplied it's original plates maybe i gather some information from the licence plate number. The seller knew the VIN was funny when i bought it, he said that's the way the bank and all the paperwork has it. In any event I will know more after a trip to the DMV in the next couple of days and I'll keep you posted. Ernie |

Earnie, there are enough red flags right now that if you paid with a bank draft or check or anything other than 'cash' I would stop payment on those until the title is checked out.
"clean title" in most states means no liens. It doesnt pertain to being 'not stolen'. I fear for you with this car, so stop payment ASAP on monday if checks have not cleared. Get the VIN checked as you say is happening, then proceed from there. Sounds too scary to me to part with hard earned dollars when there are so many doubts. Just my humble opinion.
