Default Best fitting Large tube headers for 68 SBC

I am getting close on my 406 engine project. I am wondering what brand some of you guys have used in the large tube header world, that fits good for a sbc with standard exhaust port locations on a 67 threw 9 camaro? The only accessory will be power steering. If the PS box is going to keep me from using a nice header, I will go back to the manual. I am leaning towards a 1 7/8ths, but a nice shaped set of 1 3/4 will do. So guys with large tubes headers please tell me what size you have and how it fits.

Im using headman 1 3/4 ceramic headers on my 406 with no fitment issues whatsoever.
if you got stock heads (oval port or square port)
I got D port Brodix heads and managed to grind the oval header ports at the flange to D ports and still have enough material for a leakproof seal.
here is mine on the engine

Thanks for the pic and info Harry. How was the fit on the driver side next to the gear box? Seem like this is the same header a friend and I used on his 69, and we had a little clearance issue on the pass side next to the PS gear box. I am also using D port, and angle plugged heads.

I just put my 427 sbc in with dougs d368 and they hit the idler arm on pass side and they are hitting the power steering box on the drivers side. They also was no room for the #5 plug wire boot and I had to dent the tube in more than it was originaly and have to put that same plug in with a box end wrench as the socket woun't go on that plug. My setup is
Dart SHP block
Dart Pro 1 heads with stock port location
68 350ci small block car
All new frame mount
Poly engine mounts
At this point I am going to have to dent the tubes that are hitting, If it wasn't amost impossible to remove them I think I would send them back.

Hooker makes 1-7/8" tubes that fit. Plug access isn't the best but they're OK.

That said, I don't think you need 1-7/8" tubes unless you are making up close to 600 HP.

Not to crazy about the Doug headers the way the 3&5 headers drop straight down off the port. If I remember correctly My buddys headmans did the exact same thing. Eric you got any pics of the 1 7/8 hookers. I am looking around the 550+ Hp range.

Stick with 1-3/4" headers Mike. At 550 HP you just don't need the bigger tubes!

So who makes a nice 1-3/4 header that will clear a Power steering box on a SBC in a 69? I like the finish on Dougs and the thicker flanges but it doesn't sound like they will work for me either.

If I can find a 1 3/4 set that pleases my eye with smooth bends, thats no problem! I am not crazy about a killer finish as much as I am a header that performs.

I have a set of 2 1/8 inch Stahls on my BB 69 Camaro. They are the best fitting headers I have ever had on the car. They cleared everything without any dings, and I can lean over the fenders to change all the plugs. Plus, no other headers came close in performance. I would think the SB header would work as well.

Hooker makes 1-3/4 inch tube headers - 2131-1 for coated - 2131 for painted black. Their specs show that it will work with PS, won't work with column shift or AC. Jegs carries them.

I haven't seen a 1-3/4" header that I like.

The Hedman used to be great but they changed them so they have this stupid ball seal at the collector flange (crushes and leaks!) and they made the head flange a weird oval shape that doesn't match any port that I have seen.

The Hooker 1-3/4 headers have horrid plug access with angle plug heads. The #3 and #4 cylinders needed a serious dimple to create enough plug clearance.

I have never tried the Dougs Headers, but there have been lots of very positive feedback on them.

For this reason, I have resorted to making my own headers the last two go-arounds. Been real happy with the results making my own.

Mike I agree about way 3/5 drop straight down. I am putting on some Dynatech 1 3/4-1 7/8 stepped as we speak. So far the fit is KILLER. I have had 3 other sets of headers on this car and so far these kill everything. I still need to install the plugs on the drivers side to verify plug clearence. I will update some time today. These things tuck up super tight for great ground clearence and have way more clearence around the p/s box than the pictured D368's.
I am still blown away by the fit.....

My prior headers.....

Headman 65003's.....1 3/4
Dynomax/Summit......1 5/8
Hooker super comps...1 3/4

Yeah I came across the Dynatechs todays. Looks like a nice designed header. I am looking into the function of step headers tonight. In my head I can see some advantages and disadvantaged. Anyone one to chime in on their characteristic feel free to share.
