Default vin-less october 1969 m21 muncie

I just got my hands on a M21 muncie that has no vin. It is dated in october 1969. Is this absolutely for a 1970 car or could it be for a late production 69 Camaro ? How come is there no VIN ? Could this be an over the counter transmission ?

Does it have a stamped assembly date? If so, what is it?

iT could be for a october or a november of 69 car, see if it is a 5660 or 5661 on the case.

If it has a stamp code it will designate the model year. The 661 case hase been found in some 69 cars and the 660 case was also used in the 1970 model year. The stamp will either be "P9" or "P0" with some numbers and letters after that. That is the model year for the transmission.

That Muncie was assembled October 10, 1968, not 1969, so it's for an early production 1969 car.

Starting on October 21st, 1968 (11 days after yours was built), they started stamping an additional letter after the date code to indicate if it was an M20 (A), M21 (B) or an M22 (C). Yours doesn't have the letter, so it was built in 1968.

Wow ! now you know your Muncies ! that explains the "no letter". Now about the "no vin", does this mean an over the counter tranny ? an under warranty replacement ?

It "could" be an over the counter purchase, but not a service replacement since a service replacement would have a "CT" NUMBER (or BT, PT, LT, etc...) stamped into it.
