I am curious - has anyone seen in person a car that's been done by Foose and team on the show Overhaulin? I wonder about the quality of something they do in only 7 days (paint, body, chrome). Anyone?

I've seen several of them over the years and the overall results are pretty good.
Each one varried a little, I imagine mainly due to the condition it was in before and the amount of time they needed to get them straight enough for the "Reveal" ...
Since the paint was done by pro's for the most part, and they had access to good facitlites and LOTS of folks to help block them - I wasn't surprized to see good to great quality results for most of them. Even the 'drivers' had good quality finishes on them and minimal chips and other signs of wear after they were a few years old.

I did talk to one of the ladies at Hot -August who owned one a few years back and she said she had some 'brake issues' initially, but they took the car back and got it straightened out quickly - could have been just a balance or bias issue, she wasn't sure. It was an older Cadillac anyway and they were never known for fantastic brakes...

On the "flip-side" - I saw one of the ones from that show that built the cars on spec. to sell at auctions and it was terrible!
Paint was mediocre w/ some minor 'peal' in the flank panels.
The body work was mudane at best.
Panel fit was by 3rd graders.
Bumbers had lousey chrome finish and were not square to the body.
The engine had a coolant leak - sweet smell in the air and a small puddle under it. Could just be a loose clamp - but on a 'high-dollar' "collector" vehicle?
Other than that it was a 'nice' car ...

I have seen a couple in person and they look good for a 7 day turn-around, but they do not look they do on TV I saw sanding scratches and some other fairly obvious blemishes. Anyone that has every built a car knows that you can't do a great job in a week. You can't even prep a car for paint in a week, if you are going to do it right.

What they get done with a week is impressive for sure and for the price the owners pays you really can't complain.

I've always been a bit leery of what kind of quality you can fit into a whole restoration in 7 days time. Even with an unlimited budget and manpower, there has to be some sacrifices made somewhere.

I'm also very curious as to what the tax liabilities are for these "fortunate" people who get their wrecks rebuilt for "free". I'm sure the IRS wants their cut and considers the improvements to be income for the recipient.

Does anyone have any numbers to show what the tax liability might be?

I may be wrong but I don't think there would be a tax issue. It would be like a couple guys coming over and roofing your house for free, right?

The fair market value of the improvements is taxable as ordinary income to the recipient.

I don't know about a car show but the company I work for was involved in an episode of DIY to the rescue. We did a red garage organization. the home owner got a 1099 for about ten grand. That was the value of all things "donated".

I never checked it out but someone told me that what they do on Overhaulin' is to rent the car to Overhaulin' for a week. The "renter" "makes it his own" and then returns it to the owner at the end of the lease (week) and improvements stay with the car. I wonder if that would put the IRS at bay (like you can actually keep the tax man at bay)?

we have a jesse james lowered green impala here in town. dell rapids, sd. this car is a pos. it was bought at barrett jackson a year ago or so looks like it was built in a chop shop.

I have worked on a couple minor issues on a couple Overhaulin cars that have passed through our shop. The paint and body holds up pretty well based on what I have seen in person in my shop and at SEMA have seen probabl all of them over the years. We have done 4-7 day bodywork jobs and they are fine with excellent materials.

What you don't hear about the Overhaulin cars is the 1-2 months of debugging that happens after the 7 day thrash. It;s not like they hit the guy and drive into the sunset. One local guy here has one that took more then 2 months to get after the show was finished.

He also got a 1099 for the parts value (not labor)! But that is fair, I would gladly pay 35% of the parts value for a free ($100K??) car. But there is a case of one person bitching quite loudly. And another case of some ungratefull mad cause they supposedly blew the engine car (not original engine) even though they replaced it with a bigger / better motor!

Everything I have seen him do was held together with body filler.

I did some work on Boyd Coddingtons 57 Chezoom in 2002. The car looked great from 20 feet with exeption of being out dated. Some spots on the underside were still rusty and had cob webs, interior was cheap done etc. Not quite the fine tuned precision in detail you would expect.
