Default Troubleshooting mechanical temp guage

Will it hurt the guage if I pull the mechanical sending unit out of the head and hit it with a propane torch or heat gun to see if the gauge will move. I beleive this is my problem, but I don't know how to test it. Thanks

Instead of a heat gun, why not use a pot of boiling water instead so you can get a better comparison of the gauge reading vs. the heat source temperature?
