Had my original quadrajet profesionally rebuilt and just started up my car for the first time and noticed gas puddling up around my accelerator pump on top of the carb and the upper gasket is wet. I did not mess with it for two weeks and as soon as I tried to start it, it did it again. Any Ideas!!
I will contact the shop tomorrow and see what they say. |

check the float for saturation/adjustment. Check to see if needle & seat are sealing. Check fuel pressure.

yeah, either the float is misadjusted, crud in the needle/seat keeping it from closing off the flow or possibly high fuel pressure doing the same. I would bet on incorrect float height or adjustment. Try tapping on the carb with the handle end of a large screwdriver while it's running and see if it makes it stop. If it does stop keep in mind that probably won't be a permanent fix.
It's hard to get a "professional" cab rebuild these days when carbs were fazed out before most techs were born! Good luck! |

The reason the airhorn gasket is getting wet is because the airhorn is warped. Most, if not all, "rebuilders" do not machine the airhorn to make it flat again. The gasket is going to get wet, but if it's the part of the gasket that sits on the outside of where the airhorn lays on it, then the airhorn is warped. Not too big a deal, but if it's too warped, it will cause a vacuum leak. They make an airhorn gasket that is thicker than the standard gasket that comes in rebuild kits. This helps to take up for some of the warpage. The way to correct this is to put the airhorn on a belt sander and ONLY machine the front half of the airhorn. It gets warped because people overtighten the front 2 bolts. You will only need to machine it enough so that it removes just enough to make it flat again. As for the fuel in the accel pump rod area, the accel pump shaft should not have any play in it. If it does, then the airhorn is going to have to be removed and the hole where the accel pump comes through is going to have to be peened over to take up the play. This is another problem with them. Again, not a big deal. It shouldn't have an affect on how the engine runs.
Ask you "rebuilder" if he machined the airhorn to make it flat. I bet he will say no.
