Default Torpedo heater tuning?

I have a Reddy heater that is hard to start. It knoks off and I reset it and eventually it starts puffing smoke till it finally starts. After it gets going it seams to do fine. What could be the problem? Does it have a spark plug that could be fouled? Or do the screws on the back need adjusting?

Keith, Depends on what type unit it is. What condition is the fuel in? Try doing a google search for "PDF Reddy heater model # (your model#)" And see if you can download a free manual to the computer, then read the index for the troubleshooting section...

Assuming the fuel is OK it needs a tune up. Fresh spark plug, nozzle and a filter.

These things work like a siphon feed spray gun.

One of the 2 "screws" on the back is actually a port to hook up a pressure gauge and the other is the actual adjustment to set the correct pressure. (only a few pounds and it varies model to model)

The last nozzle I bought had the correct pressure included with the directions. If not, You will have to search the net...

The fuel is fresh and works fine in another heater. I guess I should try to replace the plug and such and then see what it does. Thanks guys.

keith i have had some expierence with these heaters
1) it sounds like the pressure needs to be checked one port is an ajustment screw
the other is to put the gauge in depending on the model the pressure varies.
2)if it is firing it probably is not the plug.
3)the filter is always good to change.
4)heavy used heaters may need a new nozzle .
5) the rotor is made of carbon it has 4 vanes sometimes they stick they can be cleaned
with some crokus cloth in a figure 8 pattern with the vane or vanes sticking
it will cause pressure problems.
there is more variables but hope this helps

First off, Desa, who makes Reddy Heater, Master, etc. is out of business and only service parts are available. Possibly some major components but they are no longer producing them. Pressure setting is vital to these units. Air filter housings are prone to cracking which also leads to irregular pressure. All components, ignitor, pressure, nozzle, pump, vanes, filter, thermal sensor must work in unison for them to run correctly and cleanly or you get the typical black smoke and/or shut off. That thermal sensor can go bad. All fuel lines must be without airleaks. Pressure guages can be purchased through their website. Good Luck!!
