my 68 camaro is primed and ready to paint, originaly I wanted a kandi paint job because it looks really good. however, everyone I talk to says if its scratched its a pain to repaint and get matched. How careful do you have to be with the kandi job? Is it really worth it??

I sprayed my golf cart with it a few years back. I used HOK candy apple red with a solar gold base. It turned out really good but now it has a few scratches and whiskey dents (from pickled chops arrant shanks) I had no luck at touching it up. Because the base is shown through the candy there is hardly any way to touch one up without a complete do over.

I paint it often on bikes. Currently Brandywine over Platinum Metajuls. True candy(UK) is difficult on completes and requires experience. It's also an obviously involved and multi-step time consuming process. Kandy Koncentrates are added to intercoat clear for faster coverage on smaller projects like bikes. The other option for all parts and completes is KBC (Kandy Basecoat), a mix of pearls into their Shimrin to mimic a candy. Much more user friendly. Flakes and pearls can also be added into the bases and clears using HOK for endless possiblities. Kandy repairs are difficult and luckily because I do bikes primarily repairing a car has not been a hurdle yet. But if so you would need to chase a great deal further than a simple BC/CC blend. Alter the pattern, overlap and mil coverage and you change the appearance. I have the color and data book ($115) but you can probably look at the data sheets on line. It'll give you an idea of what you are up against.

Scott,
The Tangelo has gone from a 3-stage to a 2-stage since SW bought the HOK line. Is it the same for the other colors?

I think i would steer away from a candy with a camaro, unless it's only going to be a trailer queen, and it is more than just stock..

I only have it (Tangelo) listed in PBC shown over a white basecoat. It's not on the KBC page. I would assume many colors are now available in KBC. I'm supposed to be on automated updates but I'll have to put my finger on the phone.

I too wanted a Candy, in my case it was HOK Brandywine. Every painter will tell you that its just not really possible to touch up a true candy, one where you put down the silver, gold, or blue, etc. basecoat. There are just too many variables. And if a painter tells you that they do it all of the time...well beware. And besides, touching up candy paint for a painter that was the original painter...same gun, same line pressure, etc. is one thing, but what if a different painter is used ? Like I said, there are a lot of variables.
What sealed my decision to go with a BC/CC instead is I went to a car show and there was a beautiful 69 Mach 1, painted in HOK Brandywine. I fell in love with the color all over again. The owner was dusting the car, and I asked him about his car and the paint and to my surprise the first thing he said: 'I absolutely hate this paint'. The hated it because he could not enjoy the car. He was terrified everytime someone walked up to it, and basically only took it to car shows. Pretty, yes; functional, not so much. JMO. -Kevin

I met a guy with a super-sweet, basically stock 68 Camaro with a deep red-purple metallic candy paint job. He said the problem he had with it was that when he showed it, because it was candy paint, that his car was put in the class with "modified or custom" cars. Then, he was beside big-money cars and stood no chance of recognition. He was obviously disappointed. If he painted it bolero red, it would have been a World of Wheels contender in the stock class. It really was that nice. But because it was a candy paint, it was judged in a whole different class.
Ok, that said. Because I drive my car and anticipate uhm, jerks, the paint on my car is and will be, easily matched with a stock-type color. Last edited by arocars; Jan 21st, 10 at 05:56 PM. Reason: n/a |
