Won't hurt the engine, but all the excessive noise tickets, blown eardrums, and PO'd neighbors will be hard to live with

if he ran no exhaust (or a very short exhaust) he might run into problems with fast cooling exhaust valves... too fast of cooling may result in problems.

Not to mention exhaust fumes in the car. Carbon monoxide is tasteless, oderless, and colorless.

Is the "kewl"sound worth dieing for?

When I got my car running last spring I took it out with a set of Dynomax Ultra flo's hanging off the headers. I had three neighbors complain to me about the noise. It rattled their windows. On the third day someone called the police. I had to talk my way out of a ticket. After I installed the X-pipe, reinstalled the mufflers and put the tailpipe on, I actually got many compliments on the sound. I even got a thumbs up by a policeman last summer. The Dynomax Ultra Flo mufflers have a flow rate over 1130 cfm each. Running these mufflers in a 3" pipe with a crossover have about the same flow rate as running an open pipe. A guy by the name of Tom Hand has a CD for sale called Silent Power. He takes all kinds of mufflers with and without X-pipes and compares them sound wise and several rpms. With this CD he also gives you a chart with muffler part numbers, costs, dimensions, air flow and sound level and at the different rpms. He compares about 55 different mufflers on thes CD. The CD I think was about $10. Tom's easy to talk to and has some geat suggestions. Tom's email is thand@kc.rr.com I think you'll find this CD a help. Email me if your interested in knowing my exact setup.
