Default 30/30 duntov cam replacement

I know I'll get a bunch of different answers, but what cam is the best replacement for the old Duntov 30/30? 68 Z/28 302 solid lifter flat tappet! Any benefit going with a roller tappet, if so, what cam for this application?

There is a great article in Super Chevy this month on just that. Probably larger than you want but going to a roller always generates more power and longevity.

What is this cam going in?

If it's an 11:1 302, use the 30-30 or at least a similar sized cam, because you'll run into problems trying to run pump gas. If you have headers and low gears and don't mind slipping the clutch you can even try one of the "off road only" grinds, but most folks will only want to run those in beefed-up 12:1 engines.

Also, do not put hydraulic lifters in a 302- it removes the high-rpm characteristics present in that engine while leaving behind the less than stellar low-rev behavior associated with a 254@.050 cam profile.

If it's not a stock or period correct 302, the answer to the question changes.

Here is that article. Read it the other day. Cam specs are on page 2.

That article was actually in the previous issue. The one I'm referring to is in the brand new magazine on the shelf.

Read both reports and I suggest all sbc owners read this!!!!!!!!!!!! However my original question was, which flat/roller solid lifter camshaft is the best choice to replace a Duntov 30/30. The article only used one specific cam.

Respectfully, you did not give any idea what you are wanting to accomplish with the cam change. You simply asked for a replacement for the Duntov cam which would lead one to assume that you wanted the direct replacement.

For instance, "My motor specs are this, this, and this. My heads are this and set up for this much lift. What cam could I use to replace the 30-30 cam to get me more torque down low, wider power band, more hp up top, better idle, etc. etc."

The more info the better.

OK, If the original # 3849346 Duntov cam is available then that's what I want, if not, then I want a cam that matches the 30/30 specs. I'm rebuilding my 68 Z/28 302 motor to stock specs with stock components(new era parts, bearings rings etc) the block, heads and intake are original as are the crank, rods and pistons.

Then they give the specs in the article I linked in post #4.

From Page 2:
"The L76 327 and DZ 302 were equipped with Elgin factory reproduction, solid flat-tappet (single-pattern) cams that speced out at 0.484 lift, 254 degrees of duration (at .050) and a 114 degree lobe separation angle (the Duntov 30-30)."

Personally unless it's a numbers matching car, I'd go for a solid roller. It will save you money in the long run.

I made the mistake of getting a 30 30 for my chev v8-its for high end road racing. slow on take off, easy to mess up push rods-the 8 18 is the way to go-wish I had.

I have a Howards Cams part # 112192-14 which replicates the specs of the original GM Part # 3849346.
.485 int/ex valve lift with 1.5 ratio rockers
294 deg advertised duration int/ex
254 deg @ 0.050" int/ex
114 deg lobe sep angle
.030 valve lash int/ex
Has nice rough idle.
Cost about $115

I always read these posts curious about what the poster wants from the cam, and it seems you have one of two things going on. One, a period correct stock restoration, or two, someone that has heard the endless stories of the Duntov 30 30 and so that's what they want.
If you want a correct restoration, or heck, if you just want a 30 30 cam then by all means do it. But... if you are concerned with performance at all you are saddling your motor with 1960's technology. Bottom line it's your car and only you need to be happy with it, but definitely consider what the goals are.

Regarding the old Duntov cam, here is an extremely interesting (at least I found it extremely intersting) I read awhile back on Speedtalk . Some interesting information regarding the Duntov cams and cam history in general.

X2 on what Sean said. And a 383 will blow a 302 into the weeds.

A 454 will do the same to a 383.
