Is the K&N filter just a bunch of hype or does it really make a difference?

I saw this somewhere but forgot where. The K&N filter itself could explode from a backfire possibly possibly someone said dunno if true but maybe it could.
I have run them for long time and they seem to work well.

I use factory filters in summer and K&N in the winter when there is no dust.

I bought a 3" x 14" (whatever a standard base diameter is) back in 1980 and still have it. It's been used on a half dozen or so cars through the years. They said 1 million miles. Well I've put an honest 200,000 or so miles on this one and it still works.

Sorry Guys, I can't see, well, let me restate, I can see the sunlight through the filter when held up to the sun.
How can these holes filter the air?

Mike, I use the Amsoil air filters that you wash and re-oil. Much finer filtration than standard paper filters .

Check your intake after the filter. Standard air filters don't leave a fine grit in the intake, K&N does. That grit goes through the motor... Your trading a minor if any increase in HP for a very real reduced engine life due to increased wear from that grit.
Use at your own risk. |

I saw this on a car I bought, so I replaced the K&N with a stock filter. The Doug Roe quadrajet book lists some filter restrictions. With a proper stock filter you can get good filtration and good airflow. TTFN Mat

Been using them for years...never had any issues with dirt that I know of but never had a reason to pull the heads...HP/performance difference is noticeable to me...like said before wash and re-oil when the color starts to fade... The main reason is I hate having to fork out $35.00 every 30-35k for a paper fliter, for an extra $20 I get one that lasts forever... A little greener too...no throwaway...just my .02

Stock paper filter,5 years old, maybe 3000 miles on it.
I forgot to remove at the track....went 11.8X...removed filter and went 11.82...so I put filter back on. 11.8-12.0 all day.

Waste of money and should come with a Tokyo Drift DVD when you buy them.
I never understood the "filter charger kits" that require you to soak them in oil. Why does a filter need oil if it has no moving parts? So the dirt can stick to it or else it will easily get into the motor because the element is so porous. Just not appealing to me, I'll keep my paper fire retardant filter any day, still looks pearly white.
