Default 383 sbc VS. 496 bbc 650 HP

What engine will be easier to build $$ wise, and which one will have better street manners?

The camaro is set up for a sbc, so that needs to be taken into considerstion. I really like the rev of a solid sbc, but to be fair, I have never been in a well built bbc car. The curosity of the bb torque is stirring inside of me.

I'm not trying to open a big can of worms, I am just at the point that I am ready to start making some decisions, and looking for personal and profesional experiences.

Your goal of 650 hp will be easier to attain with the bbc. You'll probably have a much more "tame" engine with the bbc too. I've only had sbc's in my life because I love unexpected things, but I'm starting to think about doing a bbc to get a bit more hp with a bit less effort.

Good luck.

Ive only ever had bigblocks so im a little biased, but my best street mannered one was an iron ovalport headed 427 with a comp cams 288 street roller dual plane intake and 10:1 comp. Ran 11.50s at 121.00 in my 3600lb 4spd car driven to the track. idled great, never got hot and had 11-13 inces of vacuum at idle. And i built it cheap!Did it make 650hp?absolutely not,but it was unbeatable on the street.A cheap 496 will get you where you want easy!

If you want 650 HP from a "streetable" 383 you are gonna need to boost it or spray it.

650 with 500 cubes is easy
600+ with a 383, well youre gonna have to buzz it to make the power,
meaning it will take more gear and stall (not as streetable)

Just a few thoughts :

Every part you buy is more for a big block.

To convert a sb car to a bb will cost you about $2000, NOT counting the cost of a Big Block.

You can build a 427 or larger small block if you want.

You can get more HP from a Big Block, but why ? Unless you are racing. A 500 HP SBC is more than most people will ever need.

It was many years ago but i can tell you i had a 454 block, got a 427 steel crank for $100,ported my own heads that i had and spent the money for new bigger valves and springs, block machine work and valve seat job was 1200,pistons were off the shelf trw forged, intake was used, thats the best i can do,but by todays standards it was cheap. My 525 puts at least 680 to the tires and cost me about $9000 and that was with a lot of beg, borrow and bartering with a machinist that i was doing a 57 chevy for at the time. But your never really done,Its that new carb,or electric water pump or vac pump set up you want to add that starts to add up after you think you had enough to keep you happy.

TJS69 could you give me a little more insight as to what it takes to swap from sb to bb. I have never done it. $2000 seams a little high to me, but I am learning.

500 hp is for starters! That was funny!

Ok maybe 600 to 650 hp is a little over the top for a streeter. But maybe not. I read so many posts about guys building a motor, then wishing they had gone bigger. The way I see it, a 600 to 650 hp street car is as big as I would ever want to go, (you would never use it all anyway, but it's there), so why start with a 500 hp motor and then in a couple years, months or weeks, wish that I had gone bigger. Like one of my friends always says, "Why do it once when you could do it twice"!

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a 500 hp sb, and maybe I would be totally satisfied, for years to come, But since I am in the planning stage, I thought I would start B I G! Jim

done sbc, moved up bbc, moved back to big sbc, still not happy, want to go back to bbc. like candy , once you taste the tq and hp, its never the same, even a cheap 468.

What are you goals?
650hp will get you in the 9s if the car is set up right, heck an honest 500hp will get you in the high 10s.
But I agree do it once, go with big cubes wether big or small block.
