Default Best cam for Camaro

I need a cam suggestion that that has some proven examples. I like to compliment my Votec heads. Performance and nice roar are welcome. This is a high performance street machine, only driven on weekends. Here are my specifications.

Thanks,

Nick

69 Camaro (~3200 lbs)
331 (327 bored 30 over, forge crank)
9.8 - 10:1 compression (still defining gasket size)
Vortec heads - stock, 1.94/1.5, roller tip rockers (1.5), 0.51 valve lift max.
Holley 600-650cfm (have 600, will upgrade to 650 if useful)
THM350 transmission - Transgo shift/reprogram kit installed
3.08 rear gears - hard to upgrade, my use lower profile tires

I believe you are limited to a .450" lift with stock Vortec heads.

I had a 327 ten or so years ago, and I used a CompCams 270 Magnum (.470 lift and 224 degrees duration @ .050) and I like it a lot. You would need to run a 2200-2400 stall converter with it. It had a nice lumpy idle but had good street manners. It would work well with your combination.

I can't say if your limited to a .450" lift with Votecs but it seems small - Guess you could shorten the guides somewhat.

With a 10:1 Static compression 331 and 3.08 Gears I recommend you concentrate on a 112 LSA for Torque in a Marine Profile like the 1600 to 5800 12-240-4 XM270H 270 286 226 236 .480 .489 112° LSA

I modified the heads to accept higher lift.

Magnum 270 is one I am looking at, but I do not want a stall converter. What gears did you have, and what carb did you use?

Thanks,

Nick

I have to admit, I know little about the impact of LSA on torque in a 327. The dual duration cams I also know little about, but Comp Cams recommended a XE262H. I thought that was a little mild. The dyno of that cam and the XE268H have very similar results (350 ci).

How about single pattern cams? The Isky site says increase exhaust duration does not help.

I like the comp cams XE268 with vortecs. I would get thek-kit so that all of the components are matched.

The 268 HE or 270 magnum (or similar) are a great choice.

I'm pretty sure the .450 limit on lift is with 1.6 rockers, and since your's are 1.5 you might squeeze a bit more out of it.
I'd suggest a cam that's up near that .450 lift, with around 270-280 degrees duration. That will give you a good streetable cam with a somewhat lumpy idle and work well with your higher reaend gears.

i am using the comp cam XE 274 cam with my vortec heads, but i have had studs and guideplates along with beehive valve springs installed, car has a rough idle, but with those dynomax bullets it sure sounds good, great throttle response.

i run the lunati voodoo 268 cam in my 69 with a vortec headed 350/330ho motor. I installed crane 10309 springs without any machine work, there good to.550 lift. I beleive comp makes drop in springs now also. If you go with 1.6 rr you will need to drillout the pusherod holes. They are circular not slotted like the older cylinder heads. I've had thecam and springs in there for 3-4 years and rev it to 6k at the track without a problem. Choose cam that fits your rpm range and driving condtions. good luck.

Look at the Isky 264 Mega cam-214-214 dur. at .050, .450 lift on a 108 lsa. Works with stock converter and highway gears and has lots of low and mid range power with a mild lope. Install 4* advanced.
