Default black tailpan

Hi, I am sure by my user name you will assume I look like Walter Mathau. Anyway, I recently aquired a 69 SS clone (it is a big block) which is Lemans Blue with white stripes (z-28 type). I am considering blacking out the tailpan but have not seen this on this color combo. Opinions anyone???

Pretty much any big block SS that was not painted black had the tail pan blacked out. Having said that, I think the ralley stripes and a blacked out tail pan would look odd. But to each is own...

I have my painted on my 7. When it goes to get painted again, it will be painted it again. It is a flat black paint. I commonly see it in gloss black, but thats not correct.

Nope. It's definately not flat, zero gloss black. Read here for the controversy. A lot of misinformation is flying around on this subject. There's a lot more that just this one thread on CRG about it. http://camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=2458.0

The level of gloss is much debated, with original paint cars showing near full gloss. Definitely not flat black. Search "black tail" here and there are many threads with pics.

I don't like black rally stripes with a black tail, but white looks better. Fred has white rally stripes on his Hugger Orange 69 with a black tail, and they look fine. Will do some searching and see if I have a pic of your combo with black tail.

Looks like Fleming's has exactly what you're thinking of doing. And now that I have seen it, I am not sure I like it.

Better when striped and blacked out correctly.

I have the same scheme on my 68. The stripes are not the right dimensions but I don't think it looks too bad. The car came that way and I think the previous owner was going for a big block and ran out of funds. It had big block springs in it. If I repaint the car I will make it body color, because it is a 327. But no repaints in the near future.

Thanks for the responses and the pics. I am thinking I don't like it so much with the rally stripes either. It does look good with the hockey stripe and vinyl top, though.

I say black out the tail panel, remove the hood, decklid and cowl vent, paint them, re-install and add hockey!

I know it's not a 1st gen but I love the "berger" panel as my generation calls it. But if you paint the car black, you don't have to decide, lol.
