I have in my possesion a DZ302 engine. I am working on a 69 Camaro for my wife and it needs an engine rebuild. My question is has anyone put a 302 infront of a TH350? I also have an M-22 and all the linkage but the wife does not want a stick. Is it worth installing this engine in the car with the auto or just hold on to it for some other car? The engine is completely fresh and stock. Thanks for the advice.

The 302 isn't very good for low end torque and with a lower vacuum it may have trouble with an auto trans. I would put a 350 in front of the T350. There's a lot of guys looking for a good DZ302 to put back into their X33 and X77 cars so you may want to try and sell it or hold onto it and find yourself an X33 or X77 car to put it into. What date is the motor?

I was planning on installing a 406. I have 2 complete DZ302's and one CE shortblock and was wanting to maybe use one of them. I have always heard of the legendary stories of how good an engine it is was just thinking of trying it myself just did not know how they would work coupled to an auto. Frankly I am getting kind of tired of looking at them. Both DZ's(V0402DZ,V0925DZ) are rebuilt and complete and the CE has not been rebuilt but is all STD. I am willing to put one in this car with a loose convertor and some gear to see for myself. I have advertised them before in the past and there has been little to no interest in them. Only people looking to get something for nothing. Maybe I am wrong on their value. Can someone maybe give me a value on what they are worth? I am willing to sell or maybe trade them for some other parts. Thanks for the input.

Would you mind posting the partial VIN on that 0925 DZ block? My 69 Z/28 is a late September Norwood build with a partial VIN of 689364. I have all the original 302 parts for it *except* the DZ block. It would be interesting to how close this block (if it went into a Norwood car as well) is to what would have come in mine. Thanks!

I knew you would be watching Marc, that's why I asked him to post the dates! That would be great if his engine lines up with your car!

I am by no means a numbers man but here you go it has 19N614283 on the pad. I am not trying to solicit these just wanting to get a good answer to my question.

That is puzzling. By my references, 19N614283 would be about a mid-March 69 build. An 0925 69 block should have a partial VIN up near mine, somewhere in the high sixes. Also, the VIN shouldn't be on the pad, rather it should be stamped near the oil filter. Perhaps it is 19N514283? That would make it an Oct 68 car and allow the numbers to line up a lot better.

In my opinion, an authentic DZ302 (std or maybe .030) should command somewhere in the $1500 - $3000 range. The range depends on many things such as the completeness of the motor (carb to pan or just a shortblock). Obviously, the supply of these motors is finite, so they become more valuable every day, disregarding re-stamps of course.

My suggestion if you want an auto would be to go with a 700R and either 3.73 or 4.11 rear end gears. The R700 has a much steeper first gear and second gear and the overdrive would be great for cruising. Just a thought.

Marc,
You are probably correct on the 6 being a 5. The engine is wrapped in plastic and buried under a storage shelf and was kind of hard to read. I figured if I wanted to sell I would get the numbers then. Both engines are .030 over with JE pistons. Both are also fresh and complete from carb to oil pan including exhaust manifolds. I was planning on finding an original Z for the wife but had no luck. I am contemplating selling the engines but as yet have not decided. Thanks for the info on their value. That is the range I priced them at before with little to no response. That is the reason I am thinking of using one. For that amount of money why not.
Sr71bb, I was thinking the same thing on the trans. A 700r4 makes sense to me. that may be the way I go. I am leaning toward using the 302 as the interest in them is just not there. I always hear how people want one but when I have tried no one anties up. Must not be as popular as thought to be. Thanks for the info.

her69 - The reason you have not sold them (imo) is if someone is restoring a correct Z/28 they want the date to be correct as well... If they are building a driver and have the correct DZ already they are yanking it and putting it in storage! Then building a more street worthy SBC.

You really are sitting on a small pot of gold if you can find the right buyer! (again jmo) You would really make the right persons day if you just list them everywhere you can... Think of it like fishing... If you go every day, your bound to get a bite! Also let all the Classic car dealers you can know what you have.

As for the 700r4 tied to a DZ302. If you go that way you will need a real high stall converter. The 1-2 gear spread is gonna kill you unless every 1-2 shift is around 7000rpm. The 700r4 has a 3.06:1 1st and a 1.62:1 2nd, you will need some low end or she'll fall on her face.

Don't take this wrong, it's your stuff. I just don't think you will be happy with the final results.. As you said it's for your wife who doesn't want a 4speed. I would spring for a GM crate, a 700r4 and 3.08:1 rear end.
