Default Why won't this shifter work properly in my '68 Firebird?

I have a Muncie M-21 hooked up to a 1975 Pontiac 400 in my 1968 Firebird, and can not figure out why this shifter won't fit into the stock hole in the tunnel. My shop had to cut out a hole in the side of the tunnel in order to fit the drive train into the car, but I would like to get the shifter fixed to the way it should be, weld a plate into the hole, and put new sound deadener and carpet in.

Here is the car, fresh out of the paint booth. 12 layers later...

It's the incorrect shifter for a first gen. The neck that the shift lever bolts to for a first gen is offset towards the passenger side. Look on the side case of the shifter body and there should be a part number there. I think the correct one is 3138. You'll also need the correct linkage/mount to position correctly and the Hurst part number for that is 3734529.

You need the correct shifter body, linkage/mount, and stick/lever to make it all work correctly with a console. The stick is not so much of an issue if you're not going to use a console.

You can purchase everything through Summit but it'll cost about $350 for everything. The shifter/stick combo is $230 and the linkage/mount is $125.

X2. I had 2 68 400 4 speed Firebirds and the shifter is the same as used in Camaro. No mods to the hole at all. Nice Bird dude. I like it.

that is a "straight up" Hurst aftermarket shifter

You need the large offset shifter used in 1st gen Camaro Firebird

also need the correct installation kit

Hope you saved that piece of cut out metal so it can be re-welded back into place. Your 'Bird looks great!

It also looks like the trans is over to the drvr side a bit too much.
Check casting line of extension housing to tunnel ctr line.
Nice ride at any rate.
