Default Vortec heads, which one

I am going to order a set of Vortec heads for my 350, not a drag car, just a cruiser. I see there are a few different number or casting numbers. Which one should I get. I thought a set of Vortec 350 heads were the same. Thanks, Jerod

If you want stockers the L31 heads are a good choice. Their casting numbers are 10239906 and 12558062. You would want the later 062 casting and it is easily identifiable by the three triangles cast into the end of the head. It is limited to about .450 lift without a lot of work that makes them no longer cost-effective.

SDparts.com (Scoggign-Dickey) has a great kit for your SBC that includes everything you need to put on the vortec heads including the manifold, all the fasteners, gaskets, etc. and it was a little over $1000 shipped when I got it a while back. You will need a set of center-bolt valve covers which I got off eBay and painted chevy orange. For a street cruiser the regular vortecs will be great but if you are going with a cam with over .450 lift they have an upgrade. The edelbrock intake in the kit is spread bore. Check out the bottom of the page here: http://sdparts.com/category/sdpc-vor...-and-head-kits

062 are the one you want. 906 have an exhaust valve seat that doesn't offer as much flow as the 062. Vortec intake runners have superior flow but, the exhaust flow is only marginally better then smog heads, so you'll want all the help you can get in the exhaust port.

Last winter I bought a set of Summit Vortec heads $620 plus shipping. They're made by Dart. They have 1.94"/1.50" valves with the valve stems cut back. I had to gasket match the intake runners. For some reason Dart leaves little round noch type thing in the upper corners of the runners. It's pretty easy to do the gasket matching them yourself. If you go to Summits web site you can look at them. The springs are good to .520" valve lift. The decks are quite thicker then stock Vortec heads.

Last year when I was shopping for Vortec Heads, the Summit heads were the way to go for me. I was and still am on an extremely tight budgets

I see that some of the Vortec heads do not have the three pointy shapes on the front. It looks like the .062 have them and sounds like that is what I want. Anybody by chance have any for sale here beside ebay. Thanks, Jerod

I see them on craigslist all the time for 150-350. Of course this is a pretty large market too.
