I got my motor pulled the other day out of my 1969 Camaro, and thank you all for your input on how to pull it, along with the 4 speed. I got the motor out and I checked the block number and it was a 324 the last three, and the bore measured 3.87. The block is a year matching motor, but not a 350 as I was told. I have all the parts for my new 350, but now need to find another block that is 350, and hope that the crank and rods are reuseable. I not not thin the crank and rods in the motor I pulled will work. Any input would be great. I have many leads on 350 blocks, but would like to find out what to look for when getting a used block, as it is going to be rebuilt anyway. I am going to call my local builder Sperry Motors in Cedar Rapids, IA. Maybe they will have one for my build. Is the motor I pulled anything great or junk it, it was aa good running motor. Thanks, Jerod

Check the pad stamp and the stamped partial VIN. Maybe it's the original engine for your car. I haven't looked up the casting number, but sounds like a 307 if it is a 69 engine. If the partial VIN matches the VIN on the car, I'd oil the cylinders up good and hang onto it. This link will help you: http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml

I will get the whole number today and check. I checked the bore when I pulled the head and it is 3.87.

The 307 had a 3.875" bore, but all the rest of the SBs that came in the 69 Camaro had a 4" bore. Maybe you'll get lucky and have your original engine. If you don't want to spend a bunch of money, you can reuse the crank and rods in a 350 block and have a 327. Just get it balanced.

Yep... just like they have stated...307. You can make a 327 with your crankshaft and a 4" bore block. If you want a 350 you will need to get a complete 350 engine. (Easiest solution)
You may just want to buy a 383 crate engine.

524 is a 265 block form 1955 024 is a 69-73 2 bolt main 307 block.

Check the casting numbers again, 283 blocks have the same bore size you have on your engine.

Nothing wrong at all with a 307 with today's fuel prices!
If cruising is your goal, a 307 is fine. All it needs is a short block refresh, mild cam, 601 or other 305 4 bbl HO heads. Add a performer intake and 4 bbl carb...most of this is available for pennies on the dollar on Craigslist. Quite a few people amazed by my 307 68 Nova a lifetime ago. Put on a decal for your desired engine size.

My 307 in my 73 was no slouch. I had it with dual exhaust,th350 trans and 2,73 posi rear. I did some drilling on the 2 barrel carb to fatten it up a bit, recurved the distributor, and with skinny 70's series tires and the car flat out ran.The only thing really done to it was the stock heads were rebuilt (1.94 valves in 73) with a 3 angle valve job and back cut valves.
My frind had a 76 Camaro with a target master 350,aluminum intake and Q jet with headers and duals, th350 and 3.08 posi with wide 60's series tires. We drag raced proably hundreds of times over the summer of 89 while we both spent the days trying to get more power out of our cars. My car wasnt faster, but I could stay right on his 1/4 on any run,and if I could steal the break from him on the starting line he wasnt catching me. |

Thanks for all the input. I will keep the motor, but my local engine/machine shop has 350 blocks with the maching done tested and cranks for $650. So since my block is not a 350, I will get one of theirs as they are going to build the engine anyway. Also, I have almost all the new parts for my 350, new Vortec heads, intake and stuff. Not much you can do with a 307, that block ends with 024. Thanks, Jerod

I kept my 307, powerglide, and 10 bolt because it was original to my 69 Camaro. Someday I might put the engine and 10 bolt back in. I still have that option if I choose.
I think 307's can be built up. Trickflow has 175cc heads with 56cc chambers and 1.94 valves. Put in a decent cam, roller rockers, performer or performer rpm manifold and 600cfm carb and I bet you could make between 300-350hp. Not bad if you just want a cruiser.

It has no smog stuff just the heat riser, valve thing between the passenger side manifold and pipe, they are not center dump manifolds they go out by the bellhousing. Thanks, Jerod
