Default Muncie M22 Question?

Ok so I searched the site for this answer first and didnt seem to find it. I have been told by some people I know and have seen them for sale, so the question on them is it possible to get them with a date code but no VIN # on them or did they remove the VIN # ? And what would a rebuilt M22 worth these days ?

Transmissions have never been stamped with VIN numbers - I'm talking Camaros.

A rebuilt M22 is worth a lot to the right person (a restorer), but they are scarce as not many people want a 4 speed, JMHO.

Actually, some '67 models and all '68-'69 models got the partial VIN stamped on them. Dig around on the camaros.org site and you can find some info on how they did replacement transmissions and how to decipher the date coding.

http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#PartialVINs

I'd guess that a rebuilt M22 is worth at least a grand, probably more. Classic gets $2300 for them. Some people just nut up over "The Rockcrusher" so there's always a market for them.

Make sure it's a real M-22. A lot of people think that just because it has the big output shaft and extra drain plug on the bottom of the main case that it's an M-22. The big output was standard on all Muncies starting around 1970, and the extra drain plug was also added later, and was available on OTC replacement cases. You will need to pull the side cover to make sure it has the M-22 gears - much less angle to the cut on these gears.

Also, sometimes they would leave the VIN off by accident, and I believe some of the OTC replacement transmissions had a build date stamped on them but no VIN.

OK great and thanks alot, my just got back to me with the same answers, and yes OTC replacements was the most common reason to not have a VIn stamped on them but they did have a date code for the most part. But in any case, the M22 I was looking at just sold , so I missed out on it. It was the right date for my car and it did have the right gears as well. So my search continues, I believe my M22 is from a 70 Camaro and it has a VIN on it as well, would be nice when I find My replacement to see if the right car gets this one. And I know some one also said mentioned that some people get hung up om wanting a M22. My car is a 68 Z28 M22 car with 4.10 rear as well Canadian Car with GM Doc's. I'm just trying to get it as close as possible to the original car it once was. I'm not looking for perfection, but if it comes my way and its right for my car then I will try and get it. I do have the original Block heads and pistons and crank. Will need to find more for the engine and when its all there I will be rebuilding it and selling the 350 thats in it, which is not all that old as well. Anyway Thanks for the replies and when I get some pics put together I will post them. Thanks Paul

Paul,

A corrected dated 3925660 case is all you need. There was no ratio designation on the main case at that time.

It is generally tougher to find a no VIN case around your date compared to earlier in the model year.
