I found this nifty product today. I've seen this asked more than once, so thought I'd post it.

For a cool thirteen bucks, this nifty lil balance plate will let you use your existing 153 tooth flywheel and straight bolt starter on a 383 / 400 external balance crank!

Yep, used one when I put the 400 back in in March. I wanted to run a light flywheel. The cost effective steel ones in the 18lb range are internally balanced. They also have a real shallow cup (the inset boltcircle portion where the bolts tighten down) and it required moding the flywheel to effectively counter sink the bolts heads. Otherwise, you could not get the clutch disk to bolt down (the springs at the center portion of the disk would touch the bolt heads).

cool, so it even works then? Did you have the motor balanced, or run it as is?

The motor had been balanced before. I just went with the same clutch, and P-Plate. Seems as smooth as it was before if not more so.
