Have a '67 rs/ss convert - NOM. Need to freshen motor - thinking of going with new crate motor (zz4) - Have only dealt with old motors - will this be a difficult swap? anything to worry about with HEI ignition?
Love to hear feedback |

The ZZ4 is an easy swap, especially if the car originally came with a smallblock. If you think about it a ZZ4 is just a newer 350 with better heads, cam and intake. As far as the car is concerned it's just another vanilla flavored 350. Some guys have had some problems with HEI to firewall clearance and had to massage it in. I have an HEI in my 69, no clearance problems, works fine.

I installed a ZZ3 in my 69 Camaro and it was a bolt-in. However, I did not use the HEI. I stuck with the smaller diameter electronic distributor I had put in the original engine.

I put a ZZ4 in my 68. Worked perfectly. I had to dimple the firewall slightly and put a 1/2" spacer under the tranny mount inorder to clear the firewall with the HEI distributor. The ZZ4 also has the one piece rear main so you will need a different flex plate for auto or pressure plate for manual.
