Not sure how to tell it so I'll just tell it as it happened. Had a stressful/crazy day at work today. Got home took the camaro out to Outback 3 mins from the house. In the middle of my second beer, I hear "would the owner of the red camaro come to the front". First reaction, cops are here and I did something wrong or someone bashed into my car. Actually, I am all wrong, it turns out to be a guy with his much older wife (or mother) wanting to nothing else but to buy may car. +50K was the offer
. Even considering the fact that I DID buy my car at the TOP of the muscle car market and put a BOAT load of $$$ into it, I could have easily sold him my car, bought/build a car just like mine and made a decent profit on the deal at the end of the day. Call me crazy (40% of my thinking) or logical (60% of my thinking) as the deal just sounded too good to be true or whatever...? After a lengthy conversation, I told him "no, the car is not for sale". Seemed like a guy with a lot of money and an attitude that he could buy anything from anyone (why is he dinning at Outback ). I didn't buy her to flip her and make a profit. I bought her for much other reasons. I will always make money on the car 20 years down the road. He gave me his phone number and told me to call him if I ever decide to sell her.Believe it or not, I know it sounds crazy but at least you know how my night went... and I'll leave it at that. I may call him tomorrow (after I wake up and make sure I am not dreaming) and offer to build a car (with his money) similar to mine for a small profit.... |

If you're like me, it's a good thing he caught you into only your second beer. After about six I would have sold it. After nine, I would have started talking him down.....

wow. thats sound like a pretty decent offer but again, there is a sentimental aspect of the cars we drive. well, at least for some of us. ive had my convertables for 20 years now and they are already promised to my daughters. that is of course if they dont throw me in a rest home.

After nine, I would have bought my own car and haggled the price...

I've been offered "stupid" money for my car as well and turned it down. My brother painted it shortly before passing away so no, the car is not for sale. The funny thing is that I know that he would tell me that me turning down an offer that high was like 2 fools meeting.

Did I ever tell you that I had 3 wives? Cheryl (the human), Hot Tamale (the boat) and Shizzle (the camaro). Very much in love with all three of them and not planing to divorce any of them at the moment.

I would have countered with $58000.00 and the cost of your meal and bar tab and its yours! I will be sitting at that table over there... for the next 90 minutes!
If you care to make it an even $60,000.00 I will throw in the two children that are headed off to University!

Only you know what you have into the car. Personally unless you have a some sentimental reason for keeping it, I would have probably sold it. You're nuts if you offer to build a car for him, unless you're retired and bored. That would be a headache like no other.
Botom line if you are happy with your car and your decision to keep it, that's great. You still have his number if you decide to change your mind. Edit: After thinking about it a little, if you aren't ready to sell that would be a huge mistake. I've done that more than once and afterwards was not happy with my decision. Sometimes it's not about the money, I get bored with things pretty quick usually.

Matt, the only thing I'd change about your car would be to swap in a 5 or 6 speed and add some wings!
It's always nice to know someone appreciates your car. If it didn't have sentimental value, and spring/summer wasn't right around the corner, then I'd definitely think about selling it at a decent profit. That is, assuming that car season was over and there were some things that you would have done differently with your build. But if you sold it now you would be scrambling to build a car for the summer, or you'd have to buy one that someone else built the way they wanted it, and not the way you wanted it. And it's nice to be in a position where you can say "No. It's not for sale." It's a good way to take someone down a notch. |

Back in the mid 80's my wife got offers on my 69 all the time. She always gave them a price, no one every said the price was too high and no one ever came up with the money. It seems to me offers are like opinions.
