Default Barn find 68 SS.

Hey guys, Quick story and a couple of questions.

I was on my way home yesterday after picking up a 12 bolt for our 67 Chevelle and decided to take a shortcut down a side street I hadn't been on in 30+ years. I noticed the front of a 68 Camaro poking out of a shed way at the back of this yard. From the striping it may be a SS but it was pouring rain and no one was at home so I didn't get a good look.

Probably not for sale but my barn find mentality and curiosity has got me pumped and I plan to go back this weekend and see what I can find out.
(Maybe I wont get cussed or shot at)

Being a 69 kinda guy and know very little about 67-68 ID what do I look for on the cowl tag to tell if it is a SS?
The car is blue with white stripes and unless it's something rare I don't need another Camaro as much as I love them all I will pass along the info to my fellow TC friends.

Thanks

I don't think you can tell it from the VIN or cowl, so you need to look for parts that "regular" coupes didn't have. If it's a real SS, you're looking at multi leaf springs and a 12bolt at the least. The transmission would not be a powerglide but a TH350 or muncie I guess? Hope you found something nice, I'm sure other people will be able to tell you more..

Hi Guys, Here's an update. I'm off on Fridays and just had to go by the place again today hoping to catch someone at home. No such luck, but did notice that the car now has a tarp over it.

Went by a friends shop just up the street and stopped in and mentioned the car to him, his response was "Good luck" car has been there for years but he is a Pontiac fan (62 Bonneville factory 421 x 2 fours and 4 speed) so he has never bothered to check on the Camaro.

However as he is in the automotive business and deals with a lot of gear heads had some other useful info that might pan out. He told me where to go look at 2 other Camaros and a 57 Chevy, Says the city has been on the guy to get rid of them and last he heard guy was considering selling.

Sure enough not more than 3 blocks from where the 68 sets is a 67 SS and a 68? and a 57. No one home! The 67 has SS badges in front along with the SS hood and stripes and has a tarp over roof but looks like either a convertible or vinyl top. 68 looks like a plan Jane car but didn't get a real good look as I don't like snooping around peoples stuff unless their home.

Needless to say I'll have a busy Saturday checking these cars out.
I'll let you guys know what I find.

Hey Jerry, Come on down! Looks like the picking is good!

Hey guys, Made a parts run Saturday morning to get brakes for the little womans car. Just so happens the parts store is in the same neighborhood as the Camaros.

First stop was home of the 68 SS, still no one to be found. Starting to think the place is abandoned or a rental that is currently empty.

Second stop home of the 67 SS and the 68. Better luck found someone home.
Good news! 67 SS is an original SS 350 4 speed car the guy has owned since the 70's. Bad news! Neither for sale.

Worse news! The guy says these old cars are worth Big money and I plan to fix them up one of these days. One of these days better be real soon as the 67 was almost a see through model, rust had already eat half the of the fenders and doors off!

Oh well I wonder how often this story is repeated with old cars.
People watch B/J and see dollar signs when they have these old cars setting around but they don't usually have a clue how much time and money goes in to getting them to that point.

You know what Jim I bet thousands of owners of rotting cars think the same way and most of them will go to their grave never having sold let alone restored these cars. That is sad.
As far as Barretts , they alone have caused muscle car prices to be as high as they have been and caused many to think their cars are worth more than they really are so you are dead on bud.
That would make a cool calendar , " cars that will never sell or ever be restored "
