Hey guys, I've been standing back watching everyone's builds and thought is was time to start my own thread to keep all of my stuff in one place. I am building this car with my grandfather(actually he tells me what to do and i do it while he sits in a chair behind me). This car is going to take me a very long time to build due to the lack of money. I've built many race cars in the past but never a hobby car. Due to my grandfathers cancer we had to leave racing behind and find a new hobby. This will be the last car i will be able to build with him and this car is everything that he has wanted. I will being asking a lot of questions along the way because his memory is fading everyday(although he will not admit it).

Welcome to the fray :-). Sorry about your grandfathers health. Looks like a good start but I think some more info will be needed before any advice can be given. 1) What's the plan, Restored to original, Restification, Concours, nice driver? 2) What's missing? All we can see is a shell, subframe, rear and a couple of seats. 3) Do you have an engine, fenders, glass, interior? How much rust is in the body?

Alex welcome aboard. It sounds like your off to a good start with a solid grasp on what kinda time is involved. There is tons on information here and some truly great craftsmen. Enjoy the build and sorry about your grandfathers health, hopefully the build will bring some great memories and time together.

Looks like a great project. It is great that you are building it with your grandfather and that it means so much to him. I am sure that will make 2 dreams come true. There is enough info on this site to build your car from top to bottom. Money should not be an issue if you are patient and do lots of research and do most of the work yourself. Learn from everyone elses mistakes and knowledge. You will both be happy in the end. I hope you get to finish so you can both enjoy what you built together.

Ask lots of questions and post lots of pictures. Follow the builds that seem the closest to what you are building.

I hope gramps is around for a long time so he can take the car for a spin when it is done.

The car is a 69, six cylinder, standard interior(black), x11, lemans blue, parchment top, hockey striped. I bought the car for a six because I wanted to put a big block in the car(no power aditives) and didn't want to have to worry about keeping it original. Although the inside I want to be close to original. I was thinking about bring the paint back to it's factory color.

First question up.. I am cleaning the sub frame today I thought about coating it a bed liner type of paint. Is that a good idea? There is very minimal rust on the car. The rear fenders have been replaced and the floors roof trunk are solid as a rock. I have some surface rust on the front fenders. Do I need to clean them up and prime them or leave it for the paint man? I have a 12 bolt rear end to replace the 10 bolt. I also have monoleaf susp in the rear. I was thinking of putting multileaf but will it work with the original mounting brackets and shock brackets? The spoiler seems to be dry rotting. Can it be fixed or do I need a new one?

The surface rust I would leave for the moment, if your going to have someone else do the body work/paint your better off at the least using the same products they use for compatibility. If you want a multi leaf setup do a search on multi leaf conversion there are a few threads that cover it and what you'll need to change, keep in mind that if you tub it you will need to do something to mount your shocks. Post some pictures of what you have going on with the spoiler it will make it a little easier to tell what the problem is. As for the bedliner on the sub frame it is tough stuff and it can look good in certain areas when done well, I would say it would be a personal choice thing, for myself being as the sub frame will be visible I wouldn't. I am serious thinking about using the product on the under side of my floor though. At the end of day it's your car and you need to be happy with it, so build it with that in mind.

Welcome Alex. My opinion on the bed liner paint is NO. It's not correct
for the era and I personally think it would look bad. A lot of guys sand
blast and powder coat or paint the sub frame. You may not need to
sand blast it if it's in good shape. To keep the budget down just cleaning
and painting would be fine. IMHO. Good luck to you and your Grandfather.

Thanks Kevin and Al. I thought about using the bedliner paint for the underside as well. Won't do the sub frame that way. I will paint it satin black. I'll do more search on the rear susp.

Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting good used subframe. the subframe i have now needs a lot of work to be where i want it to be. the bottom of the the frame has multiple dents and road scars. All of the body mounts need to be replaced. If anyone has one or knows where to find one close to brandon/jackson ms, please send me a pm or email.

I found some unwanted cancer on the so called saddle bags on both sides. I only saw the drivers side at first thinking they cut this for exhaust till i looked deeper and on the passenger side. I bought this car being told it was cancer(rust) free because i have never been a welder and my grandfather is no longer able. I need guidance on what to do please. This really has me down knowing I am still paying for the car and didn't plan on replacing these panels in my budget as well.

Don't let it get to you too much, it is really not as bad as you think. I know you say your not a welder, but everyone who does weld at one had never done it before. My welder has been one of the best tools I have ever bought. You will find all kinds of uses once you get going if you decide to.

Either way if they are repaired or replaced there will be some welding required. If you have access to a MIG and learn to run it, it will save you money over having to farm the work out. The cowl area drains down behind those panels, with a mirror and light you can see some of it the from the top cowl area and the kick panel area inside the body. It may be something, depending on what you find, that you might want to remove the spot wells and access that area to clean it up and take care of while it is easy to do.
