I've got a zero-decked, 12.5cc domed piston short block. On top are 492 heads. I bought a set of Accel 437s plugs (with the same reach as the stock plugs, 0.375). Unfortunately, they didn't fit on the heads I've got.
I picked up a set of Accel 8199. They have a reach of 0.46. Do you think that these plugs reach too far and I'll have clearance issues? Thanks, Nick |

that is alot of compression with 492 heads--definitly would be looking at a autolite plug not accel--i am not certain and i hope john or someone else chimes in-i think the r45ts in ac works on that head and would cross it over to autolite -definitly index your plugs with ground strap to top or gap slightly facing exhaust valve

also with that compression go alittle cooler like r42

Yes, if there's a better solution, by all means suggest it. For one reason or another, I read a lot of posts where the Accel shorty plugs were highly suggested.

While we're at it, can someone suggest a set of plug wires? Thanks.

See if that helps you with the reach and cross overs. Did you check the reach with the heads off to see where they set depth wise ? With a dome and too much reach....you could have issues

Is there a general rule of thumb or equation for reach? This is something I probably shouldn't be guessing at.

well--you want the threads to end up at the end of head and not entrude into cylinder and you dont want extended reach plug-let me chek, i might have one of these heads laying around--accel is not the plug for high compression in my opinion unless you have to because of header issues (plug too close to header)--msd is the only wires --as many on here will tell u- taylor is no good

autolite 25 will work-do you have the angle plug 492s -is this why you want a shorty plug--the angle or straight plug 492 heads only flow 161cc intake stock--just saying with this amount of compression

Yes, I have the angled 492 heads. They've had some work done to them. Found out that my 186 heads were junk, so got the 492's in a pinch (trying to get the engine fired this Sunday).
I bought a set of the AC R42TS, but they aren't short enough. The Accel 8199's fit pretty well (in terms of clearing the headers). I have them gapped at .035, is that ok for the cam break in period? I'll look up what MSD makes in a black wire that fits over the valve caps. Thanks for your help Darrell. |

It doesn't look like MSD makes a custom fit product for my car. Are univeral wire kits the best alternative?

the universal wires will work--if you get the ones where you have to cut the wires yourself, take the time and crimp the ends correctly--the shorty plugs will work for now-but i really dont like them for racing--.045 gap if you have electonic ignition--(hei,msd,unilite ect.)--.035 gap is for points stile dist

I ended up getting a set of Prestolite wires. My only concern is two boots are nearly touching the headers. Do you know if those fabric-type bootguards would prevent the boots from melting?
I guess I'll find out how everything is going to dance together soon enough. Thanks for your help Darrell. |
