I have a 350 bored over .020, hypereutectic 9.1:1 pistons, 272 RV cam, stock heads, Edelbrock performer intake, recently rebuilt Edelbrock 750cfm #1407(would prefer a 600cfm)in my 83 Z. The engine currently has 2,800 miles on it. In the mornings it fires up on the first crank, after it gets hot and I shut it off for about five minutes it takes a couple cranks for it to start. If I shut it off and start it immediately it fires right up. Whats going on here?? Someone told me that it could be gas evaporating from my intake, I don't think so cuz it starts right up in the mornings without giving it gas. Just so you know, this problem was there before I rebuilt my carb. I'm also burning about a quart of oil every 700 to 800 miles. Whats going on???

Vaporlock? Is your gas line near any hotspots? How bout using a phenolic spacer between carb and intake. Ship your Camaro to me for a couple of weeks - I will be happy to road test and give you a full report!

Zoomin, you might be on the right track here about my gas line. It does get hot when the engines running. What is a phenolic spacer?? I have a small 1/8th inch spacer on it now. Thanks..

Hey, loving this site already. Vaporlock was my problem. I took off my fuel line and redirected it so it wasn't close to the engine and waterpump. Now it starts right up everytime. Thanks Zoomin!

A phenolic spacer looks like it is made of plastic and fiberboard - dark brown in color. These are designed specifically to prevent the transfer of heat from the intake to the carb. The heat will boil away the gas and leave the bowls empty. The excess cranking you were experiencing is the time the fuel pump takes to replace the evaporated gas. This condition is worsened by altitude - the higher, the lower the boiling point or less heat it takes to start the process.

The offer to test drive your car still stands! :0

Thanks Zoomin. Appreciate it, but this car is my only means of transportation at the moment.
