Default 5w-30 or 10w-40 or ?

Did a cam change back in winter and haven't really driven the car but around town a few times. Now I'm preparing for a road trip this weekend and want to change the oil to get that crane cam lube out of there.

I've got Cam-sheild additive but was wondering whether I should use 10w-40 or 5w-30 oil. The engine was rebuilt with new rings and bearings about 10 years(5,000) miles ago.

Thanks.

Tom

I've been using 15-40 Rotella, with cam additive, since the last rebuild.

Sorry, don't remember you build ...
Is this engine built to spec.s that require/use 5w oils?
If it's a non-LS SBC, I would recommend the 10w base for some street units, 15~20w for others - dependant more on spec.s and conditions it is operated in ...

All I have ever used whether on the track or street, 10W30.

X2 on what Everett says, plus I would use full synthetic with the cam shield additive.

John, born-with 67 L30 with stock rebuilt bottom end. FT Crane 272 cam. Will be using Cam-Shield additive. I suspect it may have run 10w-40 or 30(?)most of it's life (when my grandfather was in the driver's seat)

I should also add that I do start and drive it in the winter, even in 20-30 degree F weather on occasion when the (roads are clear).

Out here it's 'warmer' ...
15~20w-## is normally close to a year round choice for older street vehicles.
Run 15w-40 Delo in my boats and trucks ...
0~5w-20/30 Mobil-1 in the newest ones.

Tom,

Rather than use an additive, I would get an oil that has the additive package built into it. Valvoline VR1, Brad Penn, Gibbs racing etc now all offer an oil that is designed for flat tappet cam engines. As far as weight goes, it really depends on what the clearances were when the engine was built. 10W30 should be safe for almost anything.

Interesting article: http://www.enginebuildermag.com/Arti..._slippery.aspx

Just my opinion,

Take a look at the Rotella T6 synthetic 5W-40. You get the good cold flow of the 5W with the increased shear stability of the 40W versus a 30W. Plus last time I checked one of their oil analysis over on bitog it still had about 1200ppm zinc in it.

Just an FYI if it matters....Valvoline dropped the zinc level in the 30 weight versions of VR-1 to 1100ppm last year.

Not trying to hi-jack your thread Tom, but since we Americans usually go with 'more is better' is there such a thing as too much of a good thing when it comes to zinc in oil?

Amsoil has always had elevated ZDDP levela but now they went further and designed a special oil for those who use flat tappets:
Zrod oils

No problem Mark! I think I read somewhere that too much zinc can cause galling

Summit Racing's brand 10W40 for me. 1800 ppm of zinc NO additive needed.
