does anyone have a diagram of how the ignition is supposed to be wired?

From the ign sw, 12 GA pink wire to firewall connector.
Engine side of firewall connector is a cloth covered orange with white strip resistive wire to coil + terminal.
Coil - terminal to dist point set.
Return path of circuit is through dist plate through a braided wire strap, to dist body to block to battery.
Also, coil+ terminal has a yellow wire from the R terminal on starter solenoid.

The above description is for a '68 & '69 OE wiring.

that doesnt sound like all the wiring like theres 2 brown wires and a big purple one

Can you post some pictures? "Please" and "Thank you" will likely attract more responses.

Purple probably goes to "S" terminal on starter. The tach feed wire is brown in the factory loom, so one or the other might be for that, and would go to neg side of coil.
