Default Stupid Questions

My 69 (Norwood) has a build date of D9B which I believe means the second week of September. My question is does that mean my car was build in September of 68 or 69? The serial number portion of the VIN starts with 506.

Is there anyway for me to track down what dealership originally sold the car?

Also, is there anyway to get a history of who owned the car or at least where the car was owned or registered over the years?

Jim, with a vin starting 506 and a 9B (2nd week September) build date, that would line up to September of 1968.

Unless you have original documentation or can contact the original owner it would be virtually impossible to determine which dealer sold the car new. In Canada we can use GM Vintage Car services which would tell us the selling dealer only if the car was sold new at a Canadian Chevy Dealer.

There are several websites that can help you with some past title information, try using www.add123.com (Auto Data Direct). I'm sure other members will also have great information to share with you. Best of luck in your search.

Has anyone tried this add123.com? I plugged in my 69 vin, and it tells me for $4.95 they will give the the historical info. I am a little skeptical but my pull the trigger. I just doubt it as it an early Texas car.

If you want to find owner history, start with the person you bought it from and the DMV of the state you got it from and work your way back. You may or may not have luck because it all depends if people want to talk and if the DMV will release information.

There was a poster on here a week or two ago that managed to find his car he sold about 15-20 years ago, but it was a fairly rare car (BBC Convertible) which to me would be easier to find since it is easier to remember/track a rare car as opposed to a plain jane Camaro. I think he used a combination of the above and he hired someone to track it down. Just about all things are possible with funding.

NICB used to sell vehicle histories in the pre federal privacy act world. The privacy act created a national clearing house of the NICB database. The data was scrubbed clean of any names and addresses and leaves only the facts. The clearing house site is here:
http://www.vehiclehistory.gov/

All vendors who sell histories all feed off this same central database maintained by NICB, all 50 states and the federal government.

Auto Data Direct is the vendor I use for my searches because I like the style of the output and they take paypal for payment.

Since they all feed off the same database the output is the reason to use one vendor over another. Look at the sample reports of each vendor some are very elaborate with good graphics etc, others are nothing more then a teletype style dot matrix printout.

Find one that you can understand, easy read and order away.

Once you have the state and date information you have to then search other public databases such as tax grand lists that include vin numbers to find the owner.
