Natural is accepted too but it will rust unless you clear coat it.

I have two black and one clear...I prefer 60% gloss black

I used Ultra Grey for most of my 69 Camaros and I restored a original 309 with semi black for my 69 Z/28 to be more factory correct.

Indeed, if you're looking to go for original, then semi gloss black is the way to go. I just painted mine this past week.

I just replaced the original MC on my power brake equipped car (1967), it showed no signs of having ever been painted. I clear coated the new one, we'll see how long that lasts!
If you're trying to duplicate the original for show purposes it seems to me that bare cast is the ticket, with plenty of attention to keeping it that way as it's gonna rust without some kind of protection, maybe a film of light oil or such!..... hipirn

I agree with Charlie but understand that many seemed unpainted after many years similar to how the paint did not last on 10 or 12 bolt rear assemblies and probably some were not painted. Know JerryM has them semi-gloss black when he restores a unit but he has written they are acceptable either semi-gloss or natural.

Chain store rattle can paint is not a high quality product choice for automotive painting. Catylized urethanes have a higher resistance to fluid attacks. Flushing spilled fluid wtih water will stop the topcoat from suffering damage. Or switch to synthetic fluid if any possible catastophe is a concern.

I do powder coating...used 60% gloss powder black. Can also clear coat with powder with various gloss levels... but I did not. Still perfect!

The black on master cylinders was not thick and didn't seem to last long. I would get a can of black lacquer and use it. Will be thin like I think the orig was.
