Hey guys,
I'm wondering what some of you have used to remove rust stains from the upper and lower grill mouldings? The area affected on mine is the thin line of exposed aluminum or whatever that material is. The pieces are for a standard grill on a '68. I currently have them soaked with a rust remover for porcelain but so far no dice. I'd like to repaint them and reuse them as they are in very good condition other than a few rust stains. Thanks for any replies.

Any kind of metal polish suitable for aluminum should work.

Alum wheel polish, Alcoa sells their own brand and works nice, T-shirts work nice for working the polish and buffing. Large enough also when the spot is black, move to a different place.
3M Finesse, Chrome polish, fine rubbing compound, and lastly, I find and bikers really like, Mr. Buffer, polishes anything incuding low carbon steel. I used Mr Buffer to polish/remove sticker adhesive in the bottom of a stainless dog bowl and the bottom became a mirror.

Nah, it was just 3 places, each about the size of a half of a dime.

Havnt tried on Alumium surfaces but certainly not as abrasive as some of the suggestions. Maybe worth a try.???

Steps,
I thought about using a source of phosphoric acid but figured I could control the emory cloth better...the stains were very slight. Ona another note, kids over here have made small bombs with plastic bottles of Coke (and maybe other sodas) with aluminum foil stuck inside. I think there may be one other ingredient, maybe not I can't remember. Anyway, kids would put the AL foil in the drink bottle and leave it on someone's lawn or garden...when someone picked up the drink to throw it away the recipe would mix up and become active, creating a small explosion. Some people have lost hands and gotten burned badly.

I have tried the phosoproic an iron stains in our old enamal bath and didnt do anything except etch it a liitle in that spot.... I dont want to upgrade the bath to a modern one...modern ones are too wide, use to much water go cold too fast and designed by someone with a Phd and no bloody commonsense lol Emery , even steel wool could leave sanding marks that in them selves could be a bigger mission to get out...therefore I would try the Aluminum foil ( called tin foil down under) And if not a fine stainless polishing rouge stick rather than a cutting compund.
