Question Camaro Dream Giveaway - legit?

A friend of mine sent this to me via email. They are selling chances to win two Camaros - a black 1967 RS/SS L78, and a 2012 SS/RS SLP supercharged car. I am very curious to know if the L78 car is a legit L78 or a clone. Is anyone familiar with the car? Is the cause legitimate? It says it is put on by Kids Wish Network. I am a sucker for any charity that benefits children, but I also want my dollars to go directly to helping them, if possible. If it is legit, then it is an intriguing opportunity to help a charity and give yourself a chance to win a couple of nice toys.

Anyone want to weigh in?

United Charities International, Inc owns the website... They are in Clearwater, FL

Maybe check them out with the BBB in Clearwater.

I don't know about the legitimacy of the L78 as far as numbers matching etc, but my friend won the 2009 Corvette Dream Giveaway. Won two vettes. At the time they did not give you money to pay the taxes. He had to pay a good chunk of change to Uncle Sam for the tax on both.

They don't get much good press - http://davidfeige.blogspot.com/2010/...kids-wish.html

And they've never responded to BBB info request over the years - http://www.bbb.org/charity-reviews/n...holiday-fl-622

So not sure if they are soliciting through a secondary arm (United Charities International) to hide some status or ...
I can't even find a BBB report or link to them - not good

Have received several emails about "Opportunities" to help over the years for them from several sources and links.
I've never given just based on their overwhelming BAD press and reviews over many years

Any prize you win is considered "income" for the actual value of the prize per the IRS. When you win big at the horse track or Vegas, they always take out $ on the spot to pay the IRS.

can't avoid the man

They don't quite take it "on the spot." I'd almost rather they did. I hit a fairly decent chunk in Vegas and they took all my info. They said I'll have to claim it on the next tax return and they report it themselves. It's crap though because it doesn't count what I started with BEFORE I won, just the end result (it was all in chips).

But yeah, The Man will find a way to get his cut!

My wife's sister won $1600 on the Kentucky Derby this past Saturday on a single bet. While it was not above the threshold where they take you to the room to meet with "the Man", you are still supposed to report it as income. However, you can also report your gambling losses to offset it, so we collected all of the losing tickets that we could find just in case. When it comes down to it, you are kind of on the "honors system" if they did not collect any info, since betting at the track is anonymous and on a cash basis, and they have no way of tracking you. The lady working the betting window said that the limit of winnings before they take you back and make you report it is $10K, which I found to be surprisingly high. She said she herself had cashed three tickets that day that had exceeded that threshold. This was one clerk among hundreds at the track. It kind of gives you an idea of what kind of money exchanges hands out there, and puts it into perspective what is "play money" for some folks!

I have been buying tickets for the "Ronald McDonald house" car giveaway for the past few years, we used them when my youngest had heart surgery so I never feel bad about not winning. They are giving away a Cobra this year, kind of cool with the passing of Carroll and all.

Once you get on the "Dream Car Giveaway" mailing list you will regret it, lol. I bought tickets years ago and haven't played since and they still keep sending me stuff.

That alone sounds an alarm as to how much of your donation actually goes to the cause it is supposed to support. Makes me wonder if ANYONE is going to win those cars. If you want a GOOD charity to support for kids' cancer research, look up StBaldricks.org. I have been getting my "free haircut" courtesy of them for 9 years now. I can't think of a better cause.

The Camaro Dream Giveaway is very legit. You can check out the sponsors page to see names like SLP Performance who did the 2012 supercharger upgrade to 770 HP and Carlisle, Camaro Central, Hellwig, etc.

The giveaway is sponsored by Kids Wish Network who will also be giving a portion of the proceeds to Camp Boggy Creek ( started by Paul Newman and General Norman Schwartzkopf) and Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer.

Tax-deductible donations go directly to the charity and one person will be winning both the 69 SS/RS 396/375 and the 770 HP 2012 Camaro SS/RS.

You can also see the past winners of their other giveaways on the site. Or hit Youtube and search Camaro Dream Giveaway and see the cars at a recent car show on the stage....

One person will win both cars plus 35,000 towards the prize taxes.

If you want to check it out further go to win the camaros dot com. Entry deadline is tomorrow- 11/30/12

Ok Kat. but while you are extolling the virtues of this giveaway...why wont your company work with the BBB? Why is your admin.cost percentage compared to income not found anywhere? Be honest with folks or face being banned here.

Who in turn spends about 10~12 CENTS of each Dollar collected on actually 'helping' any Kids

Not asking anyone to believe me over you, just have them to look at this charities IRS Form 990 filings and decide.
Spending $12 MILLION on fund raising for a $16 Million income for a charity doesn't rate it very high in my book - even borders on 'Non-legit', to me anyway

I do and will always continue to give to legit charities, the ones that spend the majority of funds collected on their actual charity recipients vs. Million Dollar Salaries to the Husband and Wife who 'run' this charity you are referring to being "very legit" ...
Whether it 'wins' me a car or not

I'm sure they will carry on spending a fraction of what they collect to 'help' someone - actually P.T. Barnum has numerous quotes that explain it very well

As always JMHO's
