If anyone can give me some recommendations on my smog test failure. I don't think I can lean out the carb any more and keep it running. Timing is at 12 initial. I failed the HC at idle. Here are the readings:
Loaded
HC 188 against 450 standard passed
CO 3.36 against 3.75 standard passed
Idle
HC 500 against 450 standard failed
CO 4.42 against 5.00 standard passed

I'm assuming this is your 406 with XE268H cam.
With 224* I 230* E duration @.050 110* seperation it probably has some lope at idle. This lope at idle is what's causing your emissions failure. The lope is caused by both the intake and exhaust valves being open at the same time. This lets unburned air fuel mixture into the exhaust raising your HC level. Fast-bleed lifters can sometimes remedy this, but then you lose the lope. I have these in my engine with a similar cam and it idles like a smog motor. I personally like the lope so I was a little disappointed with the end result.
You can try zero lashing the hydraulics without the half to full turn after. This might lower the lift and duration enough at idle to pass the test then readjust the valves afterwards.
I'm glad I don't have to deal with emissions on my '69. YET!

It is the 406 and XE268. And it is a bit lopey at idle. The HC is so close I am going to attempt to lean it out some more and run it through again. I wonder if I can play with timing a little more than the carb to help this. I am soooo close.
I may try the lifter trick if I can't bring it in.

You might try winding the timing at idle way up for the test and leaning the idle mix up just a bit more. Careful though, sometimes when you lean it out the CO goes up! Do they have a max idle RPM limit for your car? Sometimes raising the idle will clean up some of the ills created by hi-perf cams.

Man you are damn close though, aren't ya!!
