Default Setting Fast Idle speed screw on Holley 650dp

Hi guys,

I got picked up a 650dp. Came with an electric choke kit in the box which I just installed. My question is what would be a good starting point to set the fast idle speed screw? How many turns in? When i picked up the carb, the manual choke was zip tied open so I don't have a reference starting point.

I realize I need to install the carb and start the car to see where I'm at, but I just worried about firing up the car and having this thing rev to the moon.

I'd back it off all the way, and then just nudge it a little. You can always adjust a little at a time once it's idling and you've set the idle mixtures.
Is it new? It may already be set for a decent idle speed. They're usually set to run straight out of the box.

Generally, 1400 rpm is the spot.
Trial & error is the key.
But, the easiset way to adjust is notice present rpm with fast idle cam in place, shut engine off, WOT and screw is right there to adjust, make adjustment, set fast idle cam again, start engine, and check rpm. Sometimes, you may get away with 1200 rpm.

Carbs not new. Its 7-8 years old carb but it just came off my brothers Nova. He went through the carb about 6 months ago and it was running perfect on his zz3 in his Nova. He pulled it off a couple months ago to put on a 680 vac secondary quickfuel carb since he has a auto.

So its best to start with the screw only one or two turns in and go from there. Holley's instructions don't really give a starting point other than it should be pretty close from the factory.

I wouldn't adjust the fast idle until after you have the choke installed on the carb and the carb on the engine and running... The fast idle isn't going to cause the engine to rev to the moon, it might be higher than you want it to be but you can release it manually or shut the engine off and adjust it down some...

I have a holley 670 avenger on a 351 and from the factory had to back down the choke/fast idle. I'd play with it assembled(elec.choke installed) and adjust it to hold the throttle just past curb with the choke fly barely closed (not on the engine). You may want to warm up the engine with your pressent carb. and then swap to set curb on new carb. Then remove to play with fast idle screw. Is difficult to reach unless you have a high rise intake or alot of patience and a flexible screwdriver.
Though I found the 670 to be under powering my engine it's efective enough and gets slightly beter fuel economy than a 700 or beter.

Don't even open the screwdriver drawer... Use a small 1/4" (I believe) wrench. Try an ignition wrench, shut the engine off, open throttle and turn screw...

"factory setting for most carbs.. be a briggs and stratten or stil chainsaw is usually 1 1/2 turns choke off and same with the mixture screws.
To get into rage on both often means dialing in t5he idle circits by adjusting the seconday butterflies...little screw on the under side on opposite side to throttle linkages..its adjustable while engine running.
Never set butterflies full closed..causes jamming and associated issues.

What does any of that have to do with the chokes fast idle mechanism that holds the primary throttle blades open when the choke is on?
