Question Rare Fiberglass Gibb 69 Camaro L-88 ZL1 Cowl Hood ---

I purchased this hood about 10 years ago from someone on Craigslist.

Just happened to want a hood like it , and was intrigued by the story I was told about it.

I was told it was a SUPER RARE (1:12 in Fathom Green) L-88 hood off of a Gibb (dealership) zl-1 69 camaro. There were 69 total built EVER. Its fiberglass and weighs about 40lbs.

I cant be positive about anything that I was told, so I was wondering if you guys could help me. I can take pics of it anywhere you ask, and post it if it would help me verify what I was told.

I didnt pay a crazy amount for it, but probably more than I should have if its just an ordinary aftermarket hood.

I just had never seen BLACK (gray) fiberglass, and figured that may be a way to date it.

Definately old looking , and looks as if the frame is metal and rusting through the fiberglass? Maybe its just a brace ... its brown on the bottom pic.

Has two hood pin holes / mounts up front.

I was told the car was in a barn and literally rusted away ... the only thing salvageable was the hood, since it was fiberglass. The roof had holes in it , ect ect. Which this is the part of the story I find fishy. Nobody would scrap a super rare car no matter the condition ( I would think ).

Just figured I would post a couple pics and see what you guys have for me. This could be interesting and fun.

Im going to sell it after I figure out what it is ... sold my car about 2 weeks ago that I was going to put it on .

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP ---

Looks home made to me... I can't imagine metal encased in fiberglass rusting, looks like wood to me but that may just be the picture.

Its actually hollow in those squared off areas , for reinforcement I guess. I just went to tap on it.

Im sure its pretty old ... fiberglass wasnt too common in the 60's , was it? This would be pretty primative and rare to be on a car , right? ---

It would actually be a ZL1 hood and I agree it looks homemade.

I had a chance to buy a similar hood last year for $200 and took a pass. If I remember right they were not that uncommon in the mid to late '70's. Some guys put a fiberglass hood on their original metal hood and others put them on aftermarket fiberglass hoods.

Fiberglass was not the least bit rare in the 60s; Corvette was fiberglass from day 1 in 1953. The factory-built 64 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt drag cars had fiberglass doors, hood, fenders, some front bumpers, etc. Many fiberglass body parts back then.

You got told what I believe is one of those "back in the day" type stories that mixed and matched a bunch of BS.

First, Gibb took the first 50 of the 69 COPO 9560 ZL-1 cars, but later sent some back. These cars all were delivered with the steel ZL-2 "cowl induction" hood.

Second, of those first 50, there were 13 Fathom Green cars http://www.camaros.org/9560list.shtml

Third, what is pictured above is known as an L-88 hood, so named because the style first appeared as an option (or part of the L-88 option) on the L-88 427 1968 corvette. The ZL-1 Corvette did use the same style hood, with ZL-1 badging, but I have never heard or seen in print that style called anything but L-88.

Your hood above appears to be Rallye Green vs Fathom. Could just be the flash lighting.

Now, the L-88 hood was used on Motion Performance built 69 Camaros (and 67, 68, 2nd gens, Vegas... Probably a choice on just about anything Motion could sell. There is a famous Rallye Green 69 Motion Camaro (google "Mexican camaro") that had an L-88 hood on it, but it had a single white stripe in the center. And the hood pins were in different position http://www.carguychronicles.com/2011...in-motion.html

Green Meanie 69 Camaro wore an L-88 hood green with white stripes.

Those straight areas can't be hollow; the hood hinges bolt into those areas on the back of the hood sides, right? Don't usually see anyone trying to bolt into plain fiberglass, let alone hollow fiberglass.

I would tend to agree it is an early aftermarket hood, if for no reason other than the quality of the underside. Unless someone more knowledgeable about the dealer converted cars weighs in here on whether the above hood looks like a certain type/mfg used by a certain dealer, I think your ad is just going to be for an old school molded fiberglass hood.

I dont know about this hood but the hoods produced now have a metal strip w/ nuts where the hinges bolt on. They usually have pop rivets holding this piece of metal. I know Harwood does this.

The last glasstek hood I got had the nuts glued into the fiberglass.

Awesome posts guys!!!

It may just be a dealer "option" hood from Gibb? Maybe he got confused thinking it came off of a rare car , but meant " its the same hood that was put on these rare cars "

Maybe someone else will see this thread and totally recognize it.

Im 95% sure it isnt "homemade" ... it has too nice of edges. ---

The history of that time at Gibb Chevrolet is well known, some of the people still around. Lots has been written about it.

Gibb didn't modify cars sold through the dealership. He had the special run of 50 COPO L78 automatic Novas in '68 and the 50 ZL1 Camaros in '69. He had a working relationship with Dick Harrell and some of the Novas went there for wheels, headers, T-bars. Harrell built the #1 ZL1 race car and at modified least two other ZL1s.

I strongly doubt Gibb Chev had anything to do with your hood. Post it on the Harrell site; maybe it was one of his.

Same type hood used on Baldwin Motion 69 camaros. The brown edging is reinforcement.
Make sure your bolt holes are not stripped otherwise its just a pin on hood.
VFN repops a similiar hood but yours looks original.

I have seen some old fiberglass hoods that were thin light weight racing hoods that were we lift off hoods and used 4 hood pins and no hinges

This looks like one of the lift off hoods that someone added reinforcement to it and converted to a hinge mount hood

I have an old L88 hood and mine looks different on the bottom

I could be wrong because there was a bunch of small companies making fiberglass hoods and they look similar on the top but different styles on the bottom
