Default Advice shopping for Pro Touring Camaro

I just sold my 69 that was basically stock and am now considering making the leap to a pro touring where someone else has done the expensive work on modern upgrades. My concern is with the ones that have LS1, LS2, etc engines in them that previously lived under the hood of a Corvette 10 years ago. It seems like an enormous risk not knowing, really, how many miles are on the drivetrain which i can't work on like i could my normally aspirated 327.

Any thoughts from someone who has already made this leap.

Thanks

Well... if you go LS3 then its going to be newer.. LS1 is pretty old these days...
My best advice is look at the quality of the work and parts... if its all bolt in.. it's likley not top grade....
If it has a floating rear... it was a serious owner that used it for roadcourse or auto cross...
would require some before during and after mods photos...
Buy a car from someone on Lateral g or PT.com that is known... will get the best quality that way IMHO

That car doesn't look Pro-Touring ! Other than the engine upgrade.

Thank you, that's what i need. So this is probably just a restoration with a new drivetrain.
I'm ok with that but should i steer clear of the "older" LS1?

Most important to me is a reliable driver with newer equipment, suspension, etc.

Yes this car doesn't appear to have any brake upgrades or suspension upgrades !
I would go with at least an LS2 if it were me but nothing wrong with an LS1 if it was freshened up with low milage!

Thanks, sounds good, except I couldn't really know the true milage so it would be a gamble like any used car i guess.

This appears to be put together well, just with stock suspension, right?

Thank you for the input

That car has an automatic transmission - not my first choice for a pro-touring car; the crossover tube in the exhaust looks like it's not actually operational; I can't tell what kind of brakes it's got on the front end - disk or drum; the fuel tank looks like a stocker - don't try to run this car in a corner with less than 1/2 tank of gas.

In short, so far as I can see from the limited picutres, this isn't a pro-touring car.

Low budget swap and not cleanly done. I would look elsewhere unless it is real cheap and willing to do some work. Nothing about the car is what I woud define as "pro-touring".

I would keep an eye on the classifieds on pro-touring.com, lateral-g.net and ls1tech.com. And then look for a car that has a build thread, so you can see what's been done, and how well it was done.

You're probably looking for an LS type motor (LS1,2,3,6,7 or LQ4,9, LY6, etc.), T56 trans, tubular control arms(Hotchkis, SpeedTech, DSE, etc) w/ adjustable coilovers, or a full blown PT front clip, 4 link rear, big 4 wheel discs (Wilwood, Baer, C5/6 conversion).

Even if you could just find one with the engine and trans in place, a lot of the other stuff can be added pretty easily. If you don't know what you're looking for check a couple of the build threads on the sites listed above and you'll get a good idea of brands and costs.

Aside from the LS engine, new gauges and seats, I agree with the above comments. No suspension upgrades, no brake upgrades, 10 Bolt rear, etc. Keep looking, unless you plan on doing a lot of upgrades to it.
