I am installing a sound deadner in my 67. I have cleaned up the floor pad the best i can, but i still cant get duct tape to stick anywhere. Is there a certain kind of tape that will stick to the floor pan. I dont need much just in places to make it sink into the pans.

Instead of using tape, which will most likely let go after the heat gets to it, try using a good quality spray contact adhesive like 3M (heavy duty) and then while pressing the sound deadener into the grooves, apply LOW heat with a heat gun and roll it with a wooden roller. It will meld in and sink into all the grooves easily.

If it were summertime, I'd say just let the sound deadener sit out on your driveway on a hot day for a couple of hours to "loosen up" and then proceed. Duct tape really has no place in a car long-term... No tape will work well IMO... been there.

If you skip the factory-style sound deadener altogether, and go with a Hush Mat, Dynamat, or similar, you wouldn't even have to be concerned with this issue-- however it can get expensive.

Back to the tape not sticking... If the tape doesn't stick the surface is not clean and your sound deadener and anything else won't stick for the long haul.

What did you use to clean your floor pan?

Just a wet rag.

The floor has a layer of suet thats really hard to get off. Any suggestions on what to use to clean it up with. I thought about using a spray glue, but down the road i dont want someone to have to deal with removing it.

When I did the sound deadener on my floors after some scraping and general clean-up I followed the POR recommendation and used Marine Clean then soaked the floors in Metal Ready for 30 minutes before applying the POR-15. The Marine Clean is a water based cleaner and degreaser. The Metal Ready was a prep for the POR-15 paint I used. If you are not painting the floors The Marine Clean is all you need, scrape the floors to get up any old jute that is stuck to them and then scrub the floors a couple times with Marine Clean then towel dry and let set a while to be sure the cleaner has evaporated.

If duct tape won't stick to it, nothing else will. As Dennis has already said, you gotta clean your metal first.

Duct tape ends up being a messy gooey tape that lets go in a car from the heat it's exposed to. Seems to me that if you're so worried about not using spray glue so the next owner won't have to deal with it, why use duct tape? just sayin'... you're choice.

Like everyone said the floor has to be clean. If you really want to use duct tape, Nashua makes the best tape, sticky and durable. Scotch also makes a "residue free duct tape" that you can remove at a later time and it will not leave any of the adhesive behind, I've used it and it is true to claims.

If you don't want anyone to have to deal with adhesive down the road then it makes sense to remove what is there now so you can benefit as well when the tape sticks

What kind of sound deadener are you planning to use, aftermarket foil backed butyl that you peal and stick or the factory style pads you get in a pre-cut set?

Its the Foil type without the any peel and stick. Im hoping the molded carpet will push down any SD that maybe be sticking up.

I dont like duct tape either. I like the A/C aluminum tape they use on air conditioning ducts.
