I thought X33 Z's would automatically have the in dash Tach along with a floor consol and full gauges------ am I wrong?

I do not like the TT. My COPO car has the center fuel guage like this one but had a factory console and guages. I am not sure how that all fit together......hopefully William will chime in and let us know.

Tach and gauges were not part of the package until later in the year. "X" codes started mid December. Tachs were an option then.

Trim Tag looks good to me. Tach and console were optional on these early build cars but if you got the tach then you had to get the console for gauges.

Tach and console gauge package were always an option to my knowledge, contrary to popular belief. My original late '69 build has a tach and it is listed as an option on the window sticker, but no console.

From CRG; "Tachometer was optional except post-May Z/28's."
Trim Tag looks genuine to me. "Matching DZ 302 engine" doesn't necesarily mean original, born with....

The VIN on that car would indicate that the car was built before X codes were in use. I don't think that cowl tag matches the info in the VIN. My 69 was built in Nov 68 and has a higher (and later) VIN number than this car. This car would have been built before mine. X codes started in Dec 68. My VIN is 124379N544XXX. You can check VINs and production dates on the CRG site. It would seem that this car was built well before Jan 69 as the cowl tag shows.

Yeah, I didn't pay that close of attention, Robin. Wonder if the VIN listed is a typo ? Or else the TT came from a different car ??

I pointed this out to the seller a couple of days ago and they said they would look into it. If it's not a VIN typo then something ain't right.

hmm, seems like if it was a typo, they would've corrected it by now. I still believe the tag is an original GM piece, however it does look a bit tweeked. Can't say for sure about the rivets ?

I can't comment on if its original or not, but the tag definitely has a bend in it. So I would assume its been off at least.

Trying not to beat a dead horse, but I looked up the VIN that is published on the eBay ad and according the the VIN, this car would have been built in October 1968 rather than January 1969 as the cowl tag says. If we assume that the VIN listed is correct, then somebody may have wanted to get an X code on a pre X code car to "prove" that it is a real Z/28. Without either a matching VIN engine, paperwork or an X code, it's pretty hard, if not impossible to positively prove that it is a Z/28 (as far as I know). If somebody did put a fake cowl tag or a cowl tag from a real Z/28 on the car, they didn't do all their homework since an amateur like me can pick it out.

My real X77 has a 01B build date with a vin of N574xxx. Some uneducated buyer is going to get an expensive clone!

If your car is a real Z/28 the window sticker will also list it as an option. The only difference is the 4 speed was always required and the tach only required later. |
