I always thought I had a 69 RS until I went to the Mesquite, Nv car show this weekend and saw a true Z28. It had alot of the same options and hole for the badging as my car so it made me wonder if mine is a Z28.
History on my car. Ive know it since I was a kid. Has been parked in my moms neighbors driveway since 1976 when he was going to turn it into a drag car. When I finally bought the car 3 years ago it didnt have the motor or trans to help me. He removed all the badging decades ago and even started filling them in. However, it does have the correct holes for the Z28 badging. Im positive that he wasnt trying to make it a clone. The car doesnt have A/C. It has a 12 bolt, front disk brakes and is a clutch car. Please help with anything I forgot any pictures I can add to help. Thank you all very much. Rob |

Robert, other than your car was built the first week of Feb. in 1969, the trim tag from Los Angeles, (Van Nuys) wont help you at all with determining what it was when it left the factory. How many fuel lines does it have? Is there a welded plate about 3x5 inches on the frame behind the driver's side rear wheel? Without the original engine or tranny its only guesses at this time. If the gas tank is original, you can drop the tank and see if the 'broadcast sheet' is on top of the tank, this is a LA only deal too. If its not there, the tank might have been removed for servicing the float system and the sheet removed at that time. That sheet would tell you alot about the car.
Post the VIN numbers as well here and with some digging we might learn more about it but there might not be enuf info. to be 100% sure of what you have. Remember RS is only a trim package. Z28 badges had holes in the fenders and maybe RallySport script badges could use the same holes? Others can comment too here and see if we can find out more for you.

Do you mean this plate? Yes. I already pull the tank and restored it and the sheet wasnt there. The tank had a single fuel line I believe before I changed out the sending unit. VIN 124379L521722. Does it have to have the X33 code on the tag to be a Z28?
Thank you, thank you for the help. |

There were no X codes on VN (LOS) cars.

By the VIN tag we do know it was a V8 from the factory but not which engine. The plate means it had dual exhaust from the factory but that can be for any V8 engine too. Single fuel line leaves out any engine with Roch Qjet 4 barrel engine. Fred is right, there were not X codes on LA cars anyway. Take a peek behind the rear seat upright cushion... on the metal bracing supports, see if there are any chalk marks there. Is there a sticker on the fold down lid of the glove box? If so, snap a pic of that.
Im afraid we wont ever be able to get enuf info. for you to know 100% what it was from factory.

No sticker on the glove box door. I already clean the inside of the car and cant remember any chalk marks. I attached pics of the front fender holes and marked where the rear holes where filled in but still visible (not RS holes correct?).
I was afraid of this. Nothing to say it is or isnt a Z28. |

The RS script " Rally Sport " would have been behind the front wheel opening, between the wheel and door itself. I know the SS badge on the rear panel has the same pin holes as the RS badge, since I had to swap mine. Mine is not a SS car but some previous owner re-badged it. I took it back to plain RS but the fender script SS is different than the RS script, I know that.
Im afraid its going to be 'sorry' no way to tell what is was from factory now. bummer I know.

My car does have the holes in the front fenders behind the wheel for the "Rally Sport" badging as well. Im positive the car is an RS. Just not sure on the Z28/RS.

Jim, you can check here to get some clues, but without the original engine or the build sheet, it won't be easy.
http://www.camaros.org/diffs69.shtml What is the code on the front edge of the passenger side axle tube and what is the casting date? http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#axle

Robert,
Probably an obvious question but I've got to ask. Are you familiar with protect-o-plates? Have you tried to track down the previous owners for any paperwork they might have stashed away? Our cars are both VN RS 72 72 paint and assembled only two weeks apart. Good luck!!

BU is 3.73 Posi, and it is the standard rearaxle for a Z/28.
A lot of things on your car has strong evidence for being a Z/28. Jan

Robert (sorry I said Jim earlier in the thread), I checked the CRG orphans page
http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.p...g16&board=13.0 but did not see anything listed there for your VIN (no engine or transmission). As just stated, the 3.73 rear axle is a good clue that it could be a Z28, and the axle assembly date lines up well with your VIN and build date. So the rear axle may be original to the car. Is there a tire size decal on the drivers side door? Unfortunately, without the original drivetrain or some original paperwork, it will be difficult to determine what your car was originally.

Glovebox door tire pressure sticker?
Z/28's are the only model equipped with 15 inch wheels. Here's picture of Z/28 hole dimensions:

I believe the COPO cars also had 15 inch wheels in 1969.
