I am currently looking to buy a 1970 Camaro Z28. The car I am looking at is advertised as a Z28 with SS options. The car was built in the Norwood, Ohio plant and does not have Z28 stamped anywhere in the cowl tag although it does have a 12 bolt rear end. The guy selling it said it does not say Z28 on the tag is because it is a rare Z with a SS option package. He swears it is a Z but it is rare. The Vin # is 124870N528041 and the engine codes are T0409CNJ and the cowl tag reads as

ST 70 12487 NOR260333 BDY

TR712 75 75 PNT

04C

Any Info is appreciated

Ryan

Ski, If the car's a steal, buy it. If not cough twice and pass... The engine code indicates it is for a '70 Camaro SS, 350/300 horse with a manual trans.
The SS and Z/28 options were not combined until 1995. Before that, it was either/or. Maybe the guy is confused, and it is an SS/RS?? Somewhere along the way the SS emblems were removed and the Z ones added. I am not able to say at this time for sure if all '70 Z/28's were coded on the cowl tag.
All 67-81 Camaros had leaf springs.
Does the car have the tach and gauge package?
All '70 Z's were LT1's.
The cowl tag indicates the car is red with black deluxe interior.

Well I am no expert here but all the research I have been doing on first gen Camaros I know there was not a '67-'69 Z-28/SS. They did come Z-28/RS... SS and Z-28 are performance options and RS is an appearance option (hide-a-way headlights etc.) the '70 came so late in the year Chevrolet might have scrambled to throw the car together and come up with this combination but I doubt it. Check out this 2nd Gen web site:

You might find more there.

Yes, it has the gauge package. I failed to mention it has SS on the steering wheel cross member and the tach is only a 7000 rpm tach and I read somewhere that Z tachs red lined at 8000. I had pretty much convinced myself it was not a true z/28 after these things didn't match up. Thank you for the quick response

See your other post, but I would venture to say that the engine is the correct one for the car, as the engine date is April 09, and the body date is 04C, indicating the 3rd week of April. This would be an acceptible time frame for the engine to be the right one for the car. Is there another set of numbers on the engine where the CNJ code is? Possibly a set like 10N528041
If there isn't any more numbers on the front pad, then most likely they are back by the bellhousing, on the side, stamped into the rough casting, above the area cast for the oil filter. They are real hard to find when stamped here.
Good luck!
