Question

I recently purchased a 69 Camaro SS. After looking the car over with several camaro experts, we have determain that it is a true SS that orginally had a 350 small block. My paint code states that it orginally was Cortz Silver, and there is silver paint under the black paint that is presently under it. It has the SS hood also. My questions are:

1: How rare of color is Cortz Silver?
2: Would the hocky strips have been black or white?
3: In restoring my car, how much would the value go down if I painted it a different color (say Datona Yellow)
4: The engin in it how have the Block number of #V1016UHX. What did it come out of? I cannot find this # in any of my camaro books.

I found the HX engine code listed as a 69 Vette 350/350 with manual trans. Nice engine to have even though it's not original. I personally think that changing the color of a car will devalue it due to the cost of the repaint to put it back. A potential buyer will almost always look at it that way. But since your car isn't all matching #'s it isn't as important. Like i say, if your car isn't fun or enjoyable, why have it!

Thumbs up

I would look at a few Cortez silver SS cars
before you paint yours Daytona yellow. I really like the Cortez silver cars. The hockey stick stripe color depends on interior and vinyl top color. With the current technology with base coat clear coat, the silver will hold up very well. I also have a 1970 Corvette that is cortez silver and the paint looks new after 8 years of driving.

About 7% of cars in 69 were silver. Almost the same percentage as Daytona yellow.
Stripes would be black unless it had a white vinyl top.
I agree, I kinda like the silver. If it is a restored car, the non-original color will devalue the car. Esp since that's a good original color.

Hate to ask, but how did you determine that it was an SS350 car? Unless it is an X55 car, I'd be hard pressed to prove it.

Post the VIN and trim tag and we'll go from there.

It is a funny thing about car colors. I met a guy this weekend at a cruse in with a datona yellow 69 Camaro. It I told him I loved his color and he said he wished it was silver.

I didn't think Cortz Siver was a desirable color. With my black interior I am assuming Black Hocky Strips are called for.

As for verfing my car is a true SS. They determained it by the following:

1. Trim Code X11, consistant with SS 350, but not conclusive

2. 350 Auto with Posi 12 Bolt rear end, cosistant with SS 350 SS, but agian not conclusive

3. On the rear frame rails there are metel brackets that were for the camabered exaust (presently not there)

4. The Hood is a SS hood that is Silver under the black paint just like the rest of my camaro.

5. It has orginal Power Front Disk Brakes

6. It has 5 leaf rear springs that have the orginal rubber bushings

7. It has a return fuel line to the gas tank

The local Camaro Club said this was enough to verify it was a SS. If you have another option I would Like to know. Thanks.

Hey Blk69...get that thing out on the road again yet?

Cortez silver is a pretty color....I almost purchased a Cortez silver Z/RS before I found my car. Only thing was it had RED interior....just too much of a contrast for me.

"By the book", your car would've had black stripes unless it had a parchement top originally...if I recall...your car is a 69 69 PNT car....

Steve,

My car didn't have a vinial top. It should have had the black SS strips, I think.

with no vinyl top, the stripes (hockey sticks) would of been black. with a ss 350 the tail panel is the same color as the car. (black only on big blocks). the silver/black stripe is one of my favorites. i had a 69 rs/z with black comfort weave in my youth and i also love seeing a silver car. plus you won't see as many the same color as yours at shows, the yellow seems to be more popular of a repaint color than silver. (at least it's not orange )

I know what you mean about there not being many silver cars. unfortunatly I really like the yellow. What ever color I paint it I am painting the tail panel black because that is just too cool! Thank for the help
