I have a 69 RS with a non-matching 350. It silver w/black rallies and a black vinyl top The cowl tag reads:
ST 69 12437 NOR294314BDY TR 715 693PNT 03D X11 I think thats right, kinda hard to read. I have a lot about X11 cars lately in CHP, what does mean in my application. Any help would be appreciated! |

First line-
ST 69 12437 NOR294314BDY ST-style 69-1969 12437 Camaro model NOR-Norwood Ohio plant 294314-Fisher body number BDY-Body second line... TR 715 69 B PNT TR-trim 715-Blue standard interior(???) 69-Cortez silver B-code for black vinyl top PNT-paint Third line... 03D X11 03-March D-fourth week, indicates build date of body X11- Ignore everything you read in CHP. It is not accurate. The X11 code is for cars with ANY of the following combinations... 1-Plain car with Z21 style trim group. This included items such as...wheel opening moldings, roof drip rail chrome, louvers on the rear quarter panels, and a few other trinket items. 2- Plain car with Z22 Rally Sport package. The RS package included the same things in the Z21 package, as well as hidden headlights and the back-up lamps in the lower valance. 3-SS350 with Z21 package 4-SS350 with the Z22 RS package Kurt S- Did X11 include the SS350 without either trim package as well?? |

Dave, you got it right. X11 is any car with style trim except for the Z and the SS396. You could get style trim with either the Z21 exterior trim package or with the Z22 RS package. So, an X11 could be on a 6 cylinder car, base V8, L65, or LM1.
For more information, take a look at http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#XnnCodes . Wildcatz, if you're trying to determine what engine came in your car originally, there are several things to check. #1 is the rearend. Also look at http://www.camaros.org/diffs69.shtml . Let us know what you find. Could you also post your VIN? I'll check to make sure it fits the build date. Thanks! |

Kurt- Here's a good question...his body number is after my pace car, but the VIN is 1930 before mine. What gives????

In 69, the body # is the # assigned to track the order from the dealer. As the vehicles got scheduled into the rotation, the VIN would then be assigned. Similar vehicles would be grouped together (esp by color). It would be up to the scheduler. They still do it the same way today and I don't understand all the intricacies. Also, a hot order (like the 1st ZL-1's) could get pulled ahead.
Thanks for the VIN. It matches the build date if you couldn't guess from Dave's comments. |
