Need some help again guys. Am getting to redue that 396 and I just want to be sure before I do...Had a chance to look at the block and again the casting # is 3902406 on the right side. There is also a K17 stamped by the oil filter and a J56 on the top left of the block. Any ideas as to what these are. Will look foreward to your feedback. Thanks...also where the oil pan bolts to the block 182460993 and 90101 was also stamped.

what I need to know is the casting date of the block. According to Jonesy the build date of the car is the 5th week of may and the block should have a casting date prior to this.

K17 & J56 apear to be casting dates. BUT 2 different dates on the same part does not jive.

K17=
K=Month=November
1=day
7=year, i.e. 57,67, 77, etc

J56
J=October
5=day
6=56,66,76, etc

Are the k17 and J56 raised casting digits as opposed to stamped digits?

3902406 is as 1967 only block.

Betsy

Take a look on the center of the rear bellhousing flange, the same flange where you found the Block casting number (3902406)now go up the flange to the center. Just off the center bolt you should find it.(behind the distributor.)? There should be a casting date there. Should be something like D 15 7. Those other numbers you found are cast into the block at the foundry and could designate mold numbers. They are useless.

The J56 is casted not stamped in the side of the block passenger side middle. The K17 is offset with the K being higher and the 17 lower and off to the right and this is also casted not stamped. this number is right above the oil filter. The other#'s 182etc and 901etc are stamped #'s where the oil pan bolts to the rear of the block.......Thanks again for the help.

Those numbers mean nothing if they are cast into the side of the block. Read my above post again. The casting date is on the rear bellhousing flange.

Casting dates can also be on the side of the block.
See Colvin's book.

The casting date on 67 BB was on the passenger side, middle, about where the end of the starter is. Same in 68.
