Just recieved my Camaro restoration guide in the mail, looking thru it I found the decode numbers section. According to it the way my trim tag reads 12437, this vehicle came with a v8. My VIN plate reads 12337, this specifies L6. What gives, and was this common in 68.

The trim tag doesn't give the engine option, the VIN # does. The trim tage just identifies it as a coupe or conv.

Maybe you are right Jeff, But like I said before according to restoration book by Jason Scott, when trim plate reads as follows;
10A ST 68-12437 NOR 23630 Body TR 722 GG Paint He took the 68-12437 68= model year 12437=sport coupe, 8 cylinder. 10A,10=October build,A=1st week of that month NOR= Assembly Plant, Norwood, Ohio 23630= Sequential build number 722= Gold, standard, buckets G= upper body,convertible,vinyl top color G= lower body color can anybody confirm all these codes. |

If your vin starts 123378 then its a six cylinder car. Don't use the trim tag data to find out if its a six or eight using the ST68 12437 on the trim tag. That has no link to the engine. This is a quote from www.camaros.org
See them for more decoding info "The two digit year ("67," "68," or "69") was followed by a five-digit "ST" body style code. The first two digits of the style code are the model code ("12") and the last two digits are body code ("37" for coupe and "67" convertible). In 1967 the third digit of the style code (the "x")was set to "4" for standard interior or "6" for custom interior. In 1968-69 the third digit was fixed at "4" for all models and had no meaning. While the Fisher style code is often confused with the first five digits of the VIN, the two sets of codes are different because of the different meaning of the third digit." Check what the book says again. If it really says to use the trim tag number to find out if its a 6 or 8 then the book is wrong Could you post the vin to make sure it lines up with the trim tag as far as dates go? By the way the GG paint code is for Ash gold, no vinyl top |

welcome to the Ash Gold club. I've also got the gold interior. not many Ash Gold camaros still around most have been repainted another color. is your car still gold? What do you think of the color? It takes awhile to get used to it. I like it but some of my friends make fun of it - pee green, puke green, etc. Doesnt matter to me im not changing it.

Thanks 68SS396 and Jeff H. for setting the book staight, when I bought this car it came in boxes and i'm still trying to figure out what I have.Joe68rs When I bought this diamond in the rough, I could'nt stand the color and know that I'm totally stripping this puppy I'm having second thoughts on the color.I'm having a hard time imagining the whole car in this ash gold could you email me a couple of shots of your gem.It would be greatly appreciated. Trying hard to stay as close as possible to factory or showwroom, but will never be a numbers car.

I had an ash gold 68 Chevelle. In the original lacquer finish(dull) it looked like crap. However on a 68 Camaro at the Portland Roadster(Portland OR) show a couple of years ago the color looked pretty good since it was very glossy. If I had not gotten rid of the Chevelle, I probably would have repainted it the original color. Being it sounds like your car is a project, unless you are striving for the car to be restored to original I would paint it what ever color suits your fancy. Good Luck.
